SUPER RARE Case Brothers 5394 X LP; SPRINGVILLE
Let me begin by saying you will probably never come across another knife like this for sale during your lifetime.
This is an ULTRA RARE Case Brothers 5394 X LP knife that was produced between 1912 and 1915. Those were the 3 years that the Case Brothers produced knives in their Springville factory prior to declaring bankruptcy in 1915. This knife appears very similar to the Case Canoe series, but is considerably larger...at 4 1/4 inches closed.
Jim Sargent's Book "Knives & Razors" (7th Edition) pictures this (type) knife on page 64 and indicates a value in mint condition of $5,000. That, of course, was in 2008...the year the 7th Edition was published.
This is a VERY solid knife with no cracks or chips in the stag, minimal/moderate blade loss, and still has excellent "snap" on all blades. The scales on this knife are fabulous and very well matched on the front and back of the knife. All three blades are marked "Case Bros" and "Springville" on their tangs...some easier to read than others, and also varying in font size.
The knife has, of course been used and sharpened over its 100+ year life.
I personally think this knife is in EXCELLENT condition for its age. It is NOT in mint or near mint condition.
Due to the amazing stag scales on this knife, the excellent snap of the blades, the original unrestored patina, the minimal to moderate blade loss, the rarity of the "springville" stamp and just how generally "cool" this 100+ year old knife is, I am asking a fair amount for the knife.
If you are a serious collector of vintage Case knives, don't let this one get away.
