Cattaraugus #2273 penknife
BRAND: Cattaraugus
PATTERN: Penknife #2273
LENGTH (Closed): 3”
BOLSTERS: Nickel silver
SHIELD: Bar shield
HANDLES: According to C Houston Price the number 7 indicates the handle should be one of three materials Cocobolo, Fancy Fibroid or Burnt Bone. It is certainly not cocobolo and gives no indication of being grown under a field microscope of being bone; therefore if Mr. prices references correct the handle should be Fancy Fibroid. Obviously it is a composite material of some sort but I know what it is. It does however appear to be dimensionally stable because there’s no shrinking.
BLADES: Pen blade and fingernail blade file
LINERS: Brass
TANG STAMPS: CATTARAUGUS (curved)/CUTLERY CO./LITTLE VALLEY/N. Y.
CONDITION: Very Good to Excellent
DAMAGE: Normal use and wear, master blade sharpened poorly
BLADE WEAR: Estimate 10% wear to master blade
SNAP: Master blade is very snappy, file blade has good snap closing but type friction fit when opening. May have been as the manufacturer intended it as I see no damage or excessive wear on the square end of the tang
MADE IN: USA
ADDITIONAL INFO: I don’t know much about Cattaraugus, but I do a well-made knife when I pick it up. The thing that impresses me about the old Cattaraugus’s is the fact that they all seem to be extremely well made knives. This one is no exception.
