When I first saw these beautiful gold flaked celluloid scales on this 100+ year old Golden Rule Jack I just had to have it to see if those scales were as good as they looked and they actually looked better in person. This is another one of those knives where someone has got to want it more than I do to get it. If it doesn’t sell then I’ll happily keep it. This great old survivor is between 94 and 107 years old and the gold flake celluloid has held up phenomenally. The Knife has a used and sharpened carbon steel spear point main blade with a long nail pull. The front face has a few scratches from use, a few horizontal scratches from cleaning and just a few light stains and a few very light micro-pits. The rear face is in about the same condition with maybe a tad more micro-pits. I actually can’t tell if this blade was ever even sharpened but if it was they did a professional job of it. Stamped on the front tang is GOLDEN RULE (in an arch) (over) CUTLERY CO. (over) CHICAGO, ILL. It still has much of its original factory mirror polish. The Knife has a used and sharpened carbon steel pen secondary blade, also with a long nail pull. The front face has some scattered very light micro-pitting and the rear face has just a couple of extremely light stains. Stamped on the front tang is GOLDEN RULE (in an arch) (over) CUTLERY CO. (over) CHICAGO, ILL. Both blade have hard and loud snap on open, a very good snap on close and very hard half-stops. Golden Rule is most well known for their picture knives which were paper substrates with print or photos underneath clear celluloid. I guess that knowledge of process helped them to make these beautiful gold flake celluloid scales. They still look like they are brand new with the flakes having uniform coverage and the still bright golden sparkling color. The only issue with these scales are there are about 5 very hard to see scuffs on one end of the rear scale. They’re nearly impossible to see without good light and a magnifying glass. Otherwise these beautiful gold flake or Goldstone celluloid scales are free of any cracks, splits, loose or peeling edges, missing chips or missing slivers. There are three brightly polished brass handle pins perfectly flush with the covers in each scale. The Knife has brightly polished nickel silver rounded bolsters and end caps and they are free of any dents, dings or visible scratches. It has brightly polished brass liners and two steel back springs. The back springs are free of any cracks or breaks and continue to perform the functions they were designed to perform. This great looking antique or vintage Golden Rule Cutlery Company equal end jack pocket knife was made in Chicago, Illinois between c.1911-1924 and is 3 5/8” in length.
