~ Old BRIDDELL Butcher’s LAMB SPLITTER Cleaver Type Knife ~

It use is as the title implies.

It is marked very clear on the blade face:

BRIDDELL

MADE IN U.S.A.

No.93--12"

It is 19 inches long overall, handle is approximately 6 1/4 inches. Cutting edge is just shy a 12 inches. It averages out 2 1/2 wide with a hole for hanging, the last 1/4 inch is a "rolled edge" as found and should be on meat cleavers. There is a couple of minor chips but do not distract or hamper its use. It has some pitting and overall a dark gray patina, edge is bright from sharpening.

Full tang construction with walnut handles and brass rivets. One has been replaced with a copper rivet and has a crack, it is still tight and not loose in any way. The blade has an average of 3/8 inches thick and weight is approximately 2 pounds.

Charles Briddell himself started out as a kid making pen knives in the late 1800's. His dad saw tallent and took him out of school to learn to be a blacksmith. He had a black-smith shop in Quindocquay section of Somerset County, later having moved to Marion Station, and finally to Crisfield, Maryland around 1914. He incorparated in 1925, his company stayed open through our last great depression continuing production and providing jobs. He passed in 1938 after leaving work to go home and rest. One of his three sons, Charles D. Briddell, Jr carried on. In 1944, Briddell received the coveted Army and Navy "E" flag award for excellence in war production, such as bazookas and knives for the Pacific War campaign. After the war, the company eventually became Carvel Hall.

Excellent camp or survival tool. Cool looking for a cleaver or rustic kitchen display in the chow hall. Makes a great conversation piece that is not seen very often these days.
