Folk's, I have sold 100's of Marble's knives over the yrs. I have had several request's over the yrs about selling Marble's Compasses & Waterproof Match Box's. I have decided to start letting a few of these 2 items go to other Marbles collector's around the country... All my Match Box's & Compasses are Antique / Vintage

Collector's *** This box I am guessing is from 1928-1930 because in the early 30's Marble's knurled the supporting arms with a match striker on them, they did not do that on the 1st couple ribbed 2 piece Outing sets gift  boxes,,,***You would not believe how much smoother these boxes like the 4th & early 5th screw open and closed compared to the later ones,,,their threads being die cut, instead of pressed collar threads ***

Marble's Waterproof Match Box History : Webster Marble found out about 1898 that a12 gauge empty shot shell was a slip fit inside a 10 gauge. He then turned his discovery into his match box. He made supporting arms to the 10 gauge, and used the 12 gauge as the container. Collar was threaded to recieve the outside thread allowing the container to be screwed in to close, out to open. Add a rubber washer to inside cover, knurl the outside to strike a match on it, and it became a foolproof design. The Marble's Water Proof Match Box became World Famous !!!

Explorers & Aventurers from Teddy Roosevelt to Admiral Peary & Byrd who were on quests to the North & South pole carried Marble's, Gladstone, Mich. compasses & match boxes. Charles Lindbergh on his historical flight across the ocean, spent 1lb of his precious cargo limit to carry a Marbles Ideal knife, a Marbles compass, & Marbles Match Box. They are all on display in "The Smithsonian Institution"

 Marble's made 6 model's in 5 body styles. 1st model was made & patented in 1900

ALL Marble's Match Box tool & dies were destroyed by Marble's Corp. in the turn of the last century, 2000

This is a Marble's Waterproof Match Box - 5th model, produced from 1928-1940

This is the "Ribbed" model made only for their Outing Gift sets,,,this is the "Only" product specifically designed for the gift sets, All other products were regular production !!!

Box is 2 1/2" in height & about the size of a Quarter in diameter

Bottom is Stamped : Marble's, Gladstone, Mich. U.S.A. Pat'd 1900

This Match Box is in Very Good Plus condition, see pics, a few very small boogers

This is a Reproduction of the 1950's -1960's Marble's leather Moose & Goose sheath

It has all the same markings as the original minus the keeper strap snap stamp

Sheath will fit your Marble's knives with a 4 1/2" blade such as the Ideal, Sport, Woodcraft etc.

Stamped in the leather is the old Marble's trademark

It will make a nice addition to display your sheath-less Marble's knives

Although this is a re-pro, and a quite good one at that,  it is a fact that having the original sheaths with your fixed blade knives, it can add 10% too 20% more value to the overall worth of the knife

Sheath is brand new, sealed in plastic wrap, took the pics without re-moving it from it

I saw my 1st Marble's 3 piece Outing gift set back in the early 1960's and was just taken back at it as a young lad...reckon that is what got me interested in Marble's knives, axes, and products,,,so.....

Folk's, I figured I would put this set together because of the historic implications it had on the United States of America in the very early 1900's in the exploration of our planet, engineering feats, and the safety it brought too those early explorers...For all of Webster Marble's fame as a knife & axe maker, he thought his waterproof matchbox and compass were his greatest contribution to the American sportsman...as quoted from famous arctic explorer Capt. George R. Conner,, W. L. Marble axes, knives, compasses, matchboxes  could be found from the heart of Africa to the depth of the Amazon rain forest....Peary & Byrd on their quest to be the 1st to the North & South poles carried them,,,Charles Lindbergh used up 1 lb of his cargo weight limit to carry a Marble's Ideal, Compass, and Waterproof Matchbox on the 1st solo Atlantic crossing, all 3 of them are proudly on display in the Smithsonian Institution !!! Teddy Roosevelt was a regular Marble customer...when his party became lost during an Amazon Exploration, it was Marble's Gladstone Michigan compases that guided them safely back to camp !!! It is also well documented that Marble's waterproof Matchboxes played a pivitol role in the building of the Panama Canal from 1904 -1914...moisture was such a problem that one of the 1st things issued to folk's involved in this Gigantic undertaking was a Marble's waterproof Matchbox !!! Thus, that it why I thought I would put these 3 pieces of Marble's Outing Equipment together for the history interested Marble collector !!!

This is a 3 piece Marble's Outing Equipment Gift Set

Includes :

1- Marbles Micarta handle Ideal...1 of 150 made

1- Vintage Marble's Waterproof Matchbox

1- Vintage Marble Arms #186 Short Tang Coat Compass

Knife is a 2003 Black Micarta scales Ideal...knife is 8 3/4" OAL with a 4 1/4" high carbon, brush finished blade...blade is stamped: Marble's with their Banner stamp, it is also etched: First Production Run...1 of 150,,,  aluminum pommel, put together with the age old Marble's spacer system

Matchbox is a 6th Model with the bail on it for easy handling...this model had pressed collar threads, made 1933-1970, it is stamped: Marble's Gladstone Mich. U.S.A. Pat'd 1900....and, as can be seen in the enlarged pics, it looks mint, like it was never used, exceptional shape

Compass is a #186, short tang coat compass.... stamped: Marble Arms...the compass is also exceptional condition and in fine working order, Gladstone Michigan made

Knife comes with what I believe was the most top shelf deep oil tanned sheath that was ever offered at Marble's....thick oil tanned leather, a sharpening stone pouch built in the sheath (Stone Included) very similar to the Randall's...stamped: Marble's in leather on back, as well as keeper strap snap & stone pouch snap

You have everything ya need in this historical 3 piece set folk's for all your Outing adventures, knife for all survival needs, sharpening stone to stay sharp, compass for finding your way, and waterproof matchbox for fire starting...I have a 7" stag Ideal with the same sheath & added a fire starter to the stone pouch

Folk's, when the Lauerman's bought Marble's in 1994, before they hired Mike Stewart & started regular production of their knives & Outing equipment in 1997, they were very thoughtfull and sensitive as to how all their new equipment would be stamped...they worked closely with the Marble's Plus knife club, collectors, and Marble historians so the new Outing equipment would not be passed off as Vintage (Big $$$) and confuse collectors around the world...this compass is a piece of that hard work and thoughtfullness !!!

Marbles compasses have been carried to the far corners of the globe. To the 1st expeditions to the north and south pole by Peary & Byrd, Teddy Roosevelts expiditions deep in the Amazon & Africa...Charles Lindberg carried a Marble's Ideal, Compass, & Matchbox on the 1st trans-atlantic flight that is now displayed in the Smithsonian Institution!!! Marble's compasses were simply the prefered choice for several early explorers & adventurers mapping the planet and were world renowned !!!

For all of WL Marble's fame as a knife & axe maker, he thought his compasses & match box's were his greatest contributions to the sportsman. People around him often tired of him saying: No sportsman should go into the woods without a compass...No woodsman would think of it !!!

This is a Marble's Brass Pin-On Short Tang Coat Compass

Compass is stamped on rim : Marble Arms

It was made right in Gladstone Michigan

Compass body is 1 1/8" in diameter...3/4" in height

You can see all angles of the compass in the en-larged pics on 2nd page even tho its still in the packaging

This Compass comes to ya New,Mint, in the Un-Opened, Original packaging, very, very scarce to find as there was not a large quantity of these produced...package has a few creases in it but is in wonderfull condition

Please supersize pics on the next page for a close-up look at this Marble's institution !!!
