Case 5279 question??

Postby chevycannontexasjack » Tue Feb 14, 2017 3:11 am

I recently got this knife at a thrift store, the knife seems to be mint with the Case XX Stainless stamp on both blades but the shield looks to be grinded off, is it possible this could have happend at the factory?? And why are the stag scales orange color unlike any other I have seen on case knives from this era!

Is it possible that the shield was glued in upside down? Couldn't see enough of the stamp to get an idea of the year. At some point Case quit pinning shields and went to some type of glue. I like the color of the stag and I like that you got it at a thrift shop ::tu:: .

I believe that tang stamp is 1950-64. Nice find! ::tu::

It was pinned in there, you can look inside the liner and see the two pins and what would this be valued since the shield is basically sanded off! It books for $150 mint

If I'm not mistaken the bone handle case knives were glued starting around 78 but some of the delrin handles were set in and not pinned before 78

I can't explain the shield. If it were pinned on you could see the pins in the shield having been ground. My guess is a replacement shield glued on. It's nowhere near mint so I would guess thirty to sixty bucks..

Is it probable the knife has been pocket worn enough that the letters on the shield smoothed out? I have seen many well used cases with worn down shields but none worn completely smooth. The stag looks very pocket worn as well.

Okay well pictures don't do justice, the back side handle is not pocket worn l, the front side looks to be pocket worn A LOT but there are angle grinding marks that you can see throughout the handle and the shield... the blades are completely mint and there is hardly no wear on the blades where they rub against the back spring opening and closing! ... there is something fishy going on I guess you would just have to see it in person! I'll take some good pics of the shield and front handle later thanks guys for the help

Once in a great while you will see a mint Case pocket knife with a blank shield. Factory error? possible. Also possible that Case sold some on special order with blank shields so that they could be engraved with initials or a logo.

Nice looking knife. I have another question about this knife. It may be the way I am looking at the photos, but aren't the shields normally on the same side as the main blade? In the photo showing the tang stamp, it looks like the main blade is on the side without the shield. Still, it is a nice knife.

Thanks for the additional pictures, Chevycannon. Now I can see it better and I apologize for my poor eyesight. Like I said before, nice knife!

Looks like one side is bone and the other is stag?

That knife looks to me to have more questions than answers,I've never seen a shield on a Case knife that the letters were worn off that you couldn't see the pins and if it's worn from pocket wear, why is it only worn smooth on one side.
