I guess you can't call it "mint" because you doesn't have the original box, but I sure would call it 99%+ Do you know when it was made? I've never seen one before. Really nice! Don't know where you can find a better one.::handshake:: Terry

i found this online was hoping to get some help here but from what the family of the estate said the gentleman was in his 90's and purchased this new for his collection

Gerber Legendary Blades was established in 1938, and began its own manufacturing in 1945. Two decades later Gerber began to build its own big factory at 14200 Southwest 72nd ave in Portland, Oregon, still its home today. This Gerber knife was the first folder they had ever made. Designed by Francis "Ham" Gerber. This radical new product was inspired by Thomas Lambs 1945 Patent Handle. Like some 18th century french folders the "Gerber Folding Hunter" has no visible rivets. Checkered walnut Handles.

Make: Gerber Hunter Folding Knife
Blade Material: High Speed Steel
Handle Material: Checkered Walnut
Blade Length: 3-3/4"
Closed Length: 5"
Weight: 5.9 oz

Good morning and great knife. For my 2 cents, you can call that one mint, or even mint with a scratch on the blade. Unless it is a deep scratch or a scratch from an attempt at sharpening, I doubt you'll run into a problem. Sure wouldn't be a problem with me. To me, it is a rare knife.
Here is a link to the listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Gerber- ... SwZQRYfCOO
It still has six days left on the listing and already over $100. ::tu:: :D

I looked up the Gerber folding hunter you posted in Phil Rodenberg’s book, “A Chronology of Gerber Legendary Blades.”
Phil says these knives were first produced in 1968 and were available in Delrin, smooth walnut or checkered walnut handles. They were made in high-speed steel and in stainless. In 1973 a checkered ebony handle model was available. In 1974 the Lamb handled folding hunter was discontinued.
I have never seen a Delrin version.

That was a nice collection you picked up!

The prices of those Model 1 Gerber folding hunters are all over the map. I remember reading somewhere awhile back that they were really big in Japan and were selling in the $600 range then. Don't know if that figure is still valid now.
I bought one from a good friend of mine who owned a knife store back in the 1970's that was supposedly owned by B.R. Hughes(did the Knife annuals for awhile).Doubt that makes it any more valuable but it is a nice knife. I liked carrying it because it was a large knife that didn't weigh very much;probably half the weight of a Buck 110.

I personally wouldn't call the Gerber "mint" (pet peeve with me, but I come from a background where "mint" has some pretty daunting standards) but definitely N/M and worthy of collecting the bids it already has.

However, I'll gleefully agree with your "mint" assessment on that Gerber if you will have a little discussion with me over that Schrade drop-point lockback.

This large Gerber Folding Hunter shows up on ebay quite regularly and i would like to win one but all the auctions i have watched have gone over $150, sometimes over $200 (& i am mostly a bottom fisher). I think the checkered walnut (?) handles make it most collectible.
I too would call yours "mint". It is a superb example.

TB: "that Schrade drop-point lockback"
Do you mean the 51OT ?
I think i have one or two that i'm happy to part with, if that is the one you are referring to.
