Charitable seller- Bargain of the Day

Post by btrwtr »

I realize that we are in a free market society and we are blessed in that. We can choose how and with whom we do business.

This seller tells everyone that he is operating a charity and then conducts business like this.

Buys an eBay knife for less than $55 delivered.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ulster-Camp-Cam ... 7675.l2557

Feedback left for purchase. Bazinga!! Perfect Item,Perfect Packaging,Fast Shipping,Triple AAA Ebayer++++++++ t***x ( 3188Red star icon for feedback score )
Ulster Camp/Camping Knife, Bone Handle, Never Used or Sharpened, 1927-1941 (#222339061032)
US $69.99
Best Offer Price was AcceptedThis item was listed in fixed price format with a Best Offer option. The seller accepted a Best Offer price. View Item

And then offers it for sale asking $519.99.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ulster-Camper-K ... fresh=true

Charities don't usually operate like this in my experience.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Wayne we all know that seller and his unscrupulous ways. But didn't the government issued Ulster knife have a shield that was stamped U.S.A.?

I'm embarrassed to admit, I fell victim to this seller on an Imperial barlow he had. Just started looking/researching for a nos 60-70s era version when I found one he was selling. I offered him half of what he was asking, and he accepted immediately. Only after I did more research and shopping, did I realize half of his asking price was still almost three times more than I should've paid.

So his m.o. is to wait for ignorant suckers like me making an emotional purchase.

However, he does have a lot of nice knives in his inventory I wouldn't mind having.

Charlie you have already been identified by this knife connoisseur. :D I'm curious, did you assess his Robeson for him?

If that knife was reasonably priced I would be all over it, the same for a lot of his knives in fact. He also has a nice old camillus slim stock with bone handles, coined ns liners and a saucer shield that I really like. Even if his prices were decent there's still the fact that he's an arrogant jackass.

Somewhere back in these hallowed pages was a thread on this scurrilous scoundrel. Some of us might believe, without proof, that he, in addition to his obvious shenanigans, is also a tax evasion criminal. I did a little research a few years ago, and the county in which he registered his 'charity' showed absolutely no charitable actions. None. He had published a bunch of propaganda about taking wheelchair-bound disabled people on this big boat fishing, but it turned out they had to pay their own way. There were no photos available that anyone had gone. He did show a photo of a man in a wheelchair who appeared to be mentally pretty well gone. There is currently no proof that any of this is true. But....

Considering what he wants for his knives I would not be surprised!

Over the years, this seller has been discussed Ad infinitum on AAPK. He's a convenient butt for derision.

I was actually very nice to him, as I do truly endeavor to be a nice man.

I did not tell him he had once told me I didn't know crap.

I gave him as accurate a description of his Robeson scout as I could. He was obsessing about the amount of blade wear, even doing so in less than percentage increments of 10.

Interestingly, the knife is stamped identically on all blades, which makes it early, I think. When he posts it on Ebay, look for him to tout that info.

I told him I was not an appraiser and declined to put a value on the knife. He wrote that since he was a "paid-up member of AAPK" he thought I'd be willing to help him out. Like you don't think I know that AAPK is a free site?

He'll probably post the knife at over $300.00. I'll be surprised if he doesn't.

I am pretty much convinced that the Door In The Wall charity is a complete sham.

They are a registered active business in the State of Texas and recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) entity. That said, I am not a fan of their operating model and I'm sure something unethical is going on given their response to legitimate questions and posturing.

While we are on the subject of this 'charity' seller... he has this 8OT with an odd looking match strike. Looks to me like the blade has been milled down. Or is that common to have teeth that are not very pronounce?

Looks funny to me George. I'm pretty sure the match striker disappeared on production line knives long before that one was made.

I see "the ditwit" strikes again. ::facepalm::

Charlie, I cant imagine he realizes just how dumb he could have been to react to your information as he did, but I think it just
While DITW might be a legitimate charity on paper, there's either not much charitable program output going on or the people who run the real deal are blissfully unaware of how the man running their "charitable auctions" has comported himself over the years.

I can't speak to that 8OT but I immediately regard any knife that he's selling with suspicion -- mostly because of the price, but partly because people who act like that simply can't be trusted. I imagine he has honed his snarky attitude over the years because of the sheer number of objections he's received from visitors to his listings, so he can't plead unaware to the many issues already discussed...

I did a Google Earth search on all those addresses today and i'm just saying that it looks like a bona-fide charitable Org would have an office of some sort not three residences. I'Ll bet they operate a church of some sort as well.

Here is another listing of his that had me curious at first, but now after a little research it seems blatantly misleading. I have one just like it, so it puzzled me that he was listing it as a Tennessee River Trapper when I was sure mine was an end of days knife.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Schrade-SC285G- ... xy2CZTYtML
s-l1600 (4).jpg
It has an Uncle Henry 285 main blade like mine.
IMAG0278.jpg
But all the other TRTs I've found look like this with LTD stamps, threaded bolster, and brown/red bone.
schrade-trapper-trt96.jpg
IMO, he could list it as an EOD knife and be just as collectable, if not more.

The co-founder of Door In The Wall, James Blair, died in 2005 and there is also an obituary for a Barbara Blair, which is the name of his wife, but I'm not sure it's the same woman. Both obits were from the New Braunfels, Texas area.

Their website still speaks about great fishing trips etc through the "Anglers On Wheels" group, Christmas parties, etc, but the plans for 2017 events are yet to be posted.

If you Google it, all you get are matches that take you to their websites. No mention of the charity elsewhere.

I'm just very skeptical of DITW. ::hmm::

As a rule, I shy away from "Or Best Offer" sellers on Ebay. ::td::
I know that is a legitimate way to sell, but it just rubs me the wrong way to offer a product at multiples of it's value and hope someone bites.
Just my two cents.

As a side note:

Apart from the administrators on AAPK who give freely of their time to make this the greatest knife site on the internet, NO ONE is a "paid-up" member of AAPK in regard to the time and effort Bryan has given us.
