Knife tip damaged?

Post by Dogbane »

Hi, all!

So I could not be happier with my new Lionsteel TRE; however, I noticed that there is a small bur at the tip (almoast looks like the tip is slightly bent). Do you think this is something that could just be sharpened out, or does it look like something I should worry about? Again, all feedback is greatly appreciated! :)

Looks like a pretty small burr and could probably be taken out carefully with a bench stone or small hand held stone. If you get the burr stoned out, and it looks silver, just get some ferric chloride and cut it to 3 parts water and warm it up (80 degrees or so) and dip the tip of the blade in it and leave it for 10 or 15 minutes, take it out and wash it with water then steel wool it and oil it good, that will bring out the Damascus color. Ferric chloride is available at Radio Shack. good luck, Terry ::handshake::

Welcome to AAPK! It's your knife, so a lot depends on how much it bothers you. If it's new it's under warranty so send it back for repair or replacement if it bothers you. You say you couldn't be happier, so that might tell you to just leave it as is.

It can be " sharpened out" or re-shaped by someone with the right skills but unless you have experience doing such work, I wouldn't attempt it myself. if you want to do it yourself and don't have experience doing it, buy a few cheap junker knives to practice on first.

Good luck.

From the pics, it doesn't seem to be much to worry about. Although I can totally relate to being OCD about such things.

Maybe just a few strokes on a leather strop will do the trick?

That's a very nice knife, but factory edges are always lacking something no matter how high quality the knife is, that's just how it goes (and that's just my two cents). That looks pretty minimal and it would sharpen out just fine, I would not worry about it unless you want to keep the knife unsharpened. In that case I would contact lionsteel.

Are you planning to carry it. If so, that burr will probably disappear with use. If not then what these guys all said. All good solutions, take your pick.

Thanks for all the great feedback, my friends! You all are a wealth of knowledge! Here are some photos after I gently ran the tip across a 600 grit diamond stone. The bur seemed to disappear after a few gentle strokes! I'm pretty pleased with the results! Let me know what you think! Thanks again!

You have taken care of the problem quite effectively. I was going to suggest clipping that burr off with nail clippers but you beat me to the punch. At any rate you've got yourself a dandy knife.
