Bone handles and dye?...

Post by Pablo »

So I have collected quite a few beater knives now, some with busted bone handles and some celluloid. They are too far gone to be big money collector's items. I mainly bought them to clean, re-handle, and for some re-grind to make good whittlin' knives for folks who want a good old whittler or EDC. I have plenty of bovine, horse, and deer bone lying around in the shop. I am guessing these will do fine for the handle slabs. Do any of y'all know what sort of dye I could use on the bone? And what procedure would I go about in order to dye the bone?

There is a thread around here on that very subject.
Not sure of the dye, but a homemade pressure vessel was used to infuse the bone.
I think orvet was involved somehow .. .. ::shrug::

Here is one man's procedure, with a good bit of detail, from Blade Forums:

I did a resto on an old W.H Morley knife and used Fiebings leather stain and oil dye. I was pretty happy with the outcome.

The words vintage and antique are vague. Actually most words are vague. Even the word vague is vague.

Hey Fellas, I appreciate the responses. There is a good bit more involved in this than I thought, but I think the end result will be worth it. Well, no time like the present to get started. Will post photos when I get to a stopping point. Rexstubbins... those slabs turned out nice. Thanks.
