Am I wrong to carry it?
Am I wrong to carry it?
Recently, I won a late forties early fifties M.S Limited (short lived Canadian subsidiary of Case) Canadian Navy Knife in pretty rough shape off Ebay for $20 shipped. The seller made the really dumb mistake of using something too coarse that caused scratching all over the knife to clean rust which was probably coarse steel wool or a wire brush (if he hadn't cleaned it, it might have brought more in the auction) and a backspring was cracked right at the pin closest the marlinspike, causing slightly weak snap on the marlinspike, but oddly not the blade (which snaps harder than many other slipjoints I have). I had to use my own cleaning methods (fine steel wool SOS pad) to remove the rust he didn't clean off (it was all over the spine of the sheepsfoot blade, top half of punch blade and lanyard bail), and there was pitting everywhere on the blade. Since it had already been re-sharpened, and was dull, I resharpened it (I'm not too keen on dull knives that can't cut anything).
Since I got it Monday, I've been carrying the knife. Marlinspike has been really handy getting knots out that wouldn't come loose by hand, punch blade is a good little utility blade, which can drill holes and be used as a short blade (wasn't it originally designed by Case as a can opener?), and the big Sheepsfoot blade is a good safety/rescue blade (can't accidentally poke myself or others with it.
Am I wrong to carry a knife this old and (relatively) rare, or is it OK given the awful condition?

Carry it!!! You only live once. Enjoy them.
Re: Am I wrong to carry it?
From your description of the condition, carrying that knife won't hurt the value and you'll get to enjoy it more.

I also say carry it. If it were mint it would be a harder decision - I really hate to be the one to put the first sharpening and carry dings on an older mint knife. But since someone else has already done that, it is yours to enjoy.

IMHO tote her ,work her and enjoy.
Re: Am I wrong to carry it?
I often carry and use 75 to 150 year old knives. They were made to use and I don't abuse any knife so I don't have enough time on this earth left to wear out a great old knife. I also carry a Leatherman for anything that may be hard on a knife and have had a couple of them replaced under warranty. I don't let anyone else use any of my good knives. My daughter once asked me when we were in a restaurant if I had a knife, and then said "Oh that's a dumb question, you always have a knife in your pocket." I had a custom file worked yellow pearl gentleman's lock-back made by Larry Hayes. I said no much to her surprise. Then I said, OK I actually do but you have to hand me what you want cut because you aren't touching this knife. Even if it was just to open a ketchup packet or something like that, I wouldn't take the chance of someone dropping the knife and cracking the scale. I love carrying a great old knife and they deserve to be used and not be a shelf decoration. I took a $600 mammoth ivory fixed blade deer hunting and field dressed two deer with it before I took it home, cleaned and oiled it and stored it back in my safe in perfect condition. Enjoy the knife. ___Dave

It's yours do with it what you want.
Re: Am I wrong to carry it?
I also say "Carry It".
Everytime I see a nice-looking cheaper type knife (ex: Chinese) that I think I might like to carry to keep from carrying one of my better knives that I've collected/hoarded over the years, I remember a quote from someone here on this forum:
"Life's too short to carry a Chinese knife"
That's not a political statement, just a reminder that we're only here for a short time..... so enjoy it.

To my way of thinking, any used knife, unless it is a very rare pattern, is fair game for carrying. The one used knife that I have that I would not carry is my 1930's Remington NEHI leg knife.

I say pack it. You paid good money for it, pack it and let your heirs worry about value!
