Question about a pocketknife I found..Thanks in advance

Post by springfree36 »

Hello
I am pretty new to knife collecting but I inherited my grandfathers house and all the contents. Amongst the finds were about 50 case knives, a numerous others of brand names that I knew of. My question is I found one knife that has the word SIOUX on both sides of the blade and KY on it also where the makers mark shoudl be. Does anyone have any information about this knife or heard of SIOUX pocketknifes. The handle also has a D on one side and a G on the other if that helps.. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I cant seem to find anything on it.. Thanks

Case did a series of western Indian tribes at one time but we need to see pictures of the knives to properly indentify them.

Cool-looking knife. 8) Never seen or heard of that stamp before, but the knife looks homemade or maybe an aftermarket modification to me.

Defintely not a Case. But a very interesting knife. I am curious to see what the feedback is on this one.

I would venture home-made as well - but it looks like someone who knew what they were doing.

I am leaning toward home made too, or at least modified.
Can you give us pictures of the whole knife with blades open and closed?
It may help for us to see the whole knife all in one picture. ::nod::

Good Evening all,
I have attached a few more pictures of the knife per request.. what did you mean by a one of one carmillus.. Does that make it more expensive in value.. any ideas of a value of this is by chance... thanks again all

It appears that the handle was shortened up almost into the last pin. It looks to me like a knife made out of parts but I can't identify any of the parts so I really have no idea what you have. ___Dave

I agree with Dave. The blade looks like a lock back blade made to fit an old Barlow frame.
I have no idea what Barlow uses aluminum bolsters. ::shrug::

Looks like a cut & cobble job.

I think homemade all the way,and I'm guessing the K y has nothing to do with the commonwealth or jelly but someones initials. Just my opinion. ::nod::

The SIOUX and the KY stamped on the blade was cold stamped with individual letter stamps. The meaning behind those made sense to the individual that crafted the knife but it's not obvious to the casual observer.

I'm going down my usual road here and "guess" the KY stamped on the tang stands for Kentucky and the letters in the circles on each side of the bolsters are the initials of the individual that made the knife. ::shrug::

::tu:: I would have to agree with Jerry in that the stamps are indeed individual hand stamps, I have several sets myself. Looks like the one used is either 1/16" or 1/8". However it is almost impossible to stamp a heat treated piece of steel, so someone went to a lot of work to do so on your blade, they would have to anneal the blade, stamp it, then re heat treat it. If you try to stamp a hard piece of steel, you stand the chance of breaking the stamp or the blade, besides that it will not be a very deep stamp if at all. (I;ve tried it!) ::handshake:: Terry
