Knife found in Dirt.

Post by cattaraugus57 »

Hey All, Been painting the garage where I currently live for a few weeks, taking my time.(paid by the hour!)
I Was using some Shingle's between the ground and the bottom Boards to keep the Brush out of the Dirt.
Today I moved the last one while Mowing and saw an outline of what looked to be and IS a Pocket Knife!
The weird thing is I've walked by that spot how many times and there was no Knife there until today, like it fought its way to the surface finally

Very rough condition, blade is either rusted away or broken off then rusted....
Says AMERICAN KNIFE on both sides....is it a Japanese Saber brand or an actual American Knife Co?
Has a faint crosshatch pattern on it.

You just never know what you may find eh?

Doesn't look Japanese to me;sides look like nickel silver. I have a small Waterville Knife Co knife marked in a similar way. I would say American Knife Co maybe even Plymouth Hollow Ct

Hmmmm...could be.....this house was built in the late 1800's and I was told there was/is a dump in
the rear property.
Thanks!

Sounds like you might want a get a metal detector and go over the place. No telling what else you might find! ::shrug::

Seems to me either Goins or Levine pictured similar knives.

Early American, I'm thinking.

The knife might predate the house. Nice historical find!

Thanks Charlie, the only one I have is the 2nd edition.
I'll have to have a look and see if there's anything in that one.

Should be there, + or - a page number or two.

The photos he shows there are almost not discernable.

He gives the dates as 1850- thru Civil War, I think.

Sorry to hear you're living in the garage, nothing like a free knife to perk things up a bit!

I couldn't help myself, cool find!

:D ..not living in the Garage...yet....but You can be sure I'll check it everywhere for Treasures!

Found that Page and was shocked to see the actual Knife.
Mine must be the Sheet Metal variety because the Magnet does stick to it, although the sides
are a little thick.
At first I thought it may be the Pewter model.
There is a light Brass coloration to it under all that corrosion.

Amazing that it is older than this House....a neighbors House a few doors down is dated to 1830
I believe.

If anyone needs me..I'll be out back...with the Metal Detector! ::nod::

thanks Fellas ::tu::
