Thanks guys. I wish I'd had that video in my "formative years". I knew so little, I remember going through the SMKW catalog, trying to learn to recognize the patterns without reading the captions. "Let's see now, that must be a stockman and that one over there, I'm guessing, is a trapper."

I hear ya Jerry. It was much the same for me. No real reliable source of information. I just had to pick it up where I could find it and that was not simple or easily done. Of course that was pre-internet too.

In all honesty I'm still learning so there's no shame in not knowing it all. I'd encourage anyone who can to expand on the video that Jerry posted, please do so. We sure don't want to let the wonders of the slippie fade into obscurity.

This video showcases Case knives and some of the patterns they make. Most of these patterns are not exclusive to Case. The video is 4½ minutes and will not only give you an idea of some of the patterns that are available in traditional pocket knives but will also give you some real world size comparisons.

This video (5 minutes) was posted in another thread (not by me). But if this thread is to be instructional with a purpose of acquainting folks who are new to pocket knives, with the wonderful world of pocket knife collecting (or accumulation), I thought it belonged here too.

Great info here! In the video for the Case patterns, you can blame me for the Walnut Burl and Turquoise Trapper. It was rehandled as specified by the owner as to how he wanted it done and has been shown in at least one more of his videos. Since it was a shorter vid I watched it first, but I'm going back now to catch the first one. Most of what I know was pre-internet just like Phil, but the internet has made knife research a lot easier now. Still, buying the right books can teach you a lot and bookmarking a site is easier than having a photographic memory (mine is instamatic, but instead of developing before your eyes, mine seems to disappear just as quick). AAPK has turned into one of the best places for those seeking any type of knife knowledge and this thread is another step in the advancement of spreading the word. Thanks for all the info!

Interesting video. However there is one thing shown in it that needs clarification IMHO. About a minute into the video it shows blades, previously tempered, being placed on a rotating magnetic disk and put through an induction heat treatment "to anneal the blade ends making them more pliable and easier to place into the ends of the knife during assembly". That may be true but the primary reason for this step of the process is to remove the temper from the tang, so that tang end of the blade is less hard than the tempered cutting edge of the blade. The tang end must closely match the hardness of the backsprings. Without this being done, a hardened tang would prematurely wear down the softer metal of the backspring and cause the knife to lose its snap. You need a tempered blade but not a tempered tang. Maybe a technicality, but an important one.

I own dozens of knives and I like the Cold Steel knives for durability. I also use Gerber's, most of them have been gifts but the are sturdy and sharpen fairly easy.
