Need Help on a Silver Fruit Knife

Post by Paladin »

Can anyone here read the hallmarks on this blade?
1st one is a crown. Second hallmark is a letter 'B'. Third hallmark is a Lion. Fourth is an image of a female head. Fifth is several letters: H.H & (over) J.E.B.
Any ideas as to the value on this? Condition wise, it is head and shoulders above most of these I have owned or seen.
I'd love to know the maker, age and value on this one.

I went to the site and checked it out. Nothing seems to match. Do these knives have to be from England? Any ideas?

I do believe that the crown denotes that it was made in Sheffield.

I am not an expert for certain.

The lion means that it is silver.

It looks like the lady's head is a duty mark for Queen Victoria 1838-1890.

J.E.B is John Edward Bingham's mark. Perhaps the H.H. is for Harrison & Howson?

1st one is a crown. Second hallmark is a letter 'B'. Third hallmark is a Lion. Fourth is an image of a female head. Fifth is several letters: H.H & (over) J.E.B.

Breaking it down based on that website:

Sheffield, The letter B is supposed to be a date mark maybe 1845?, the lion is .925 silver, Queen Victoria duty mark 1838-1890, and then the maker marks. I am confused as to why there were two makers..perhaps the hallmark website just isn't listing H.H over J.E.B?

As to the maker marks, I'd guess that one of the makers was responsible for the silver work, metal work etc. and the other might have been responsible for the work on the pearl handles.

1st mark crown = made in Sheffield England.
2nd mark is year made Capital B in square with corners cut = 1869.
3rd mark is lion facing left = sterling silver .925 proof mark.
4th mark is Duty mark = Queen Victoria 1838 to 1890.
The last mark is the markers mark = Henry Hall & John Edward Bingham of Walker & Hall...

http://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Make ... eld-H.html

Can't tell you the value.
They are constantly going up and down like the stock market.
Check what they are going for on eBay and take it from there....
I do know condition is everything.
The hallmarks are not that great.
