OBV Green 2 1/2 inch knife- info

Post by rea1eye »

I inherited from my dad this green 2 blade knife. It had always been in my dad's tool
box since I was a little kid. I remember looking at it many times. It was sharp so
I was always very careful handling it.

Can someone tell me about the manufacturer/ history?

It is 2 bladed ( 1 blade is broken off), 2 1/2 inches long, and has patent
number 701.878. I think picture .3 shows a blade protector (not sure)

Hi;

OVB (Our Very Best) was a trademark used by Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett Co, a hardware wholesaler out of Chicago. They eventually became today's True Value Hardware.

They did not make their own knives, yours was most likely made on contract by New York Knife Co in walden NY circa 1890s to 1920s.

You say 2-1/2" but to me it looks like a 3-1/2" "sleeveboard whittler" pattern with one of the small blade broken off. The other small blade is a broken leather punch blade.

Thanks for the info Steve. The knife is 3 1/2 inches long. I guess I need by

eyes checked. The blade is 2 inches long. We lived near Chicago, so it makes

sense it could have come from that hardware store.

Wouldn't it be nice if companies today give something with their name on it

that was durable as this knife- one of the sharpest I own including Case SS/ CV!

What sweet looking knife. Love the handles and a sleeveboard whittler with a punch blade is a very cool pattern.

Thanks for sharing!
