My older brother worked for Kroger grocery store when I was a kid and I remember him having the same opener with him each day after work

I've had a couple of them over the years;I think they were championed by Gillette as a use for their used single edged blades.The problem with them is that a single edged razor blade cannot have much side force applied to it without it breaking off.If you have cut up any amount of cardboard you will know it is very difficult to keep from doing just that.
I have several different styles of utility knives that use single edge blades and have used them all. The blades break pretty consistently.
