A little help needed .... Civil War era. Brass Sided folder
I found this about 6 feet into it from the top, still had 12 feet more to hit the log roof. Which was caved in.
When found one side was missing and the blades were encrusted with rust and crumbling very bad. The blades were a loss so I cleaned it up for my display. I guess they tossed the knife when they loss the side of it. From the articles found during the dig they used the cover dirt to throw their trash in.
I wish I could find one complete, anyone have any info on this knife please share it with me. Does any body here know someone that has one of these.
Much Thanks for any help or info you can provide

Wyatt, Welcome to AAPK, the friendliest knifesite on the world wide web
Without the blade to see the manner in which the tang was marked, it's difficult to put an age on your handle.
We use an encyclopedic listing of tang markings compiled by John Goins, now deceased.
If the tang was marked the way Waterville is abbreviated on the handle die, the knife dates early, 1847 - 1855. That would certainly be consistent with the site you're probing.
I'm sure someone here is familiar with these little knives. Any still in existence would be historically significant to many collectors, especially those of Connecticut cutlery.

That is a neat artifact.
Sorry I can't tell you anything about it, but someone here may know.

The scale is nickel silver;not brass.I have a smaller version of that knife but don't know if I can post a pic of it due to my messed up computer.I did post a pic some time back under the heading of miniature knives.

Here is an 1850 writeup about Waterville Mfg. I thought it was interesting.

Wyattearp, that is a very nice find. They are uncommon, but out there. I think if you persist you can find an intact one, albeit without the provenance of yours. I have seen similar civil war dug knives of this pattern with American Knife Co on them, as well as non-dug Holley Mfg. Co.
MB, that is a great old knife.
dhillbilly, great addition, I too found it interesting.
