Welcome.

Don't clean it!

Send better pictures of the tang and the knife.

::welcome::

I believe these were made around 1900-1930`s.

They were made by Cattaraugus Cutlery Co.

I see you did manage to establish a membership with AAPK.

So, I'll not be answering the E-mail I received from you today.

Welcome to AAPK!! ::tu::

You stated in your E-mail the knife was "hand made" and the handles "hand carved".

I doubt either of those assumptions are correct.

The knife was machine made, but hand assembled.

The handles were probably mass produced via a press, etc.

That's an interesting, but disparate combination of handle scales; a Native-American hunting buffalo and a group of adolescent girls.

Hmmmm?

We need to see the tang stamp up close and some more finely focused photos would help all around.

Probably an old knife.

Dimitri says it was made by Cattaraugus. I never disagree with Dimitri.

Hard to see from the blurry photo but I was thinking the same thing.

That is exactly how they were made, using steel dies and pressed/stamped out, if you were to look on the inside of the handle,(where the blades sit when closed), you can see the design was pushed up and out to create the 3-d effect.

I would love to find them dies!

The front handles had advertising, company logos, whatever the buyer wanted. The back handles had the native American hunting a buffalo as a Cattaraugus company trademark, in fact Cattarugus used the native American in full figure and bust, stick figures, etc. on lots of their catalogs, bill heads, fobs, boxes, etc.

I guess those might be puppies.

When I blew it up the first time I saw little girls leaning on a table top.

Long hair or long ears? I don't know.

Arms or forelegs? Again, I don't know.

But, as I never disagree with Dimitri, I'm going with puppies.

Thanks for posting the link Tom :D

How did you ever find that?

The pictures illustrate exactly what I was trying to explain about how the handles were stamped.

My usual stumble and stare trip through about 2-hours of Ebay listings. Did you get it?

This is the text of a Private Message I received today from TimberWolf55 re' my responses to his posted query about this knife.

Let me preface this by stating I am not a doctor and have never indicated to anyone that I was.

Charles Wake up and smell the coffee..cause your a Heart Surgeon doesn't mean your god, first off the man who originally looked at it >Is a collector,,,i'm not going to categorise you cause your a DR,my best friend and Female i have dated and stayed friends with,I promise would smoke you,she has her Doc as a DVM,does surgerys all the time on people for local main hospital here, and isn't a snob...Take F notes,og and charles,by the way..I did college, have a Masters(Culinary Arts at age 28)..so don't jump so damn fast...people back then could CARVE that damn good, and have seen it,i worked as a machinist....and welder..i contract now as its REAL good money where i'm at..and got out of the field i was in .because of that...i still get in to what i did at times....but make more doing commercial contracting...when i get a decent camera and take a picture of the tang stamp i will do so,its the real deal other wise...case bro/Zippo pa wouldnt want more of the pictures/New ones i took, nice try mr know it all...heat surgeon....hmmm one who operated on my uncle..was so good he made a simple mistake cough cough, and he Bled to Death..have a lovely F day charles..oh i'm a tad rough around the edges,.some people tend to piss me of some times...i can take the truth,Arrogance and BS,less its fact tend to do it,take notes Charles...have a Nice day..No more negative BS ok?

I have received a non-sensical E-mail and two PM's from this man. This was his latest.

I'm out of this discussion.

Ya'll have fun.

Wow, that is unbelievable!! That fellow seems a little sensitive. Not sure why he is picking on you, Charlie, everyone else who posted agreed with your assessment of the way in which the handle scales were manufactured.

He's not just picking on Charlie, I had the misfortune of replying to his post in the other thread. See here: http://allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_f ... &start=285 This is the text of the PM he sent me:

From Timberwolf on 5/20

"Actually i think your wrong...i took much better pictures of the knife, its in better shape than the last pictures,my son took with his cell phone,i have a better camera which worked better...#2...that was pressed together, not Done by a Jeweler...one of the people that looked at it is a friend of mine and HE OWNS A JEWELRY SHOP...do you think your so good that you know every thing and every one else is so damn stupid? i sent a picture off to zippo...in pa which THEY requested...by me,.which i did today...less you have some thing positive to say...don't say any thing at all...far as the rest,i havent herd a thing from any one CEPT YOU..."

Next time he posts, please, please, please LIE to him just to shut him up!!

Interesting that where he comes from they would allow a Doctor of veterinary medicin operate on people, in a hospital no less. "i'm not going to categorise you cause your a DR,my best friend and Female i have dated and stayed friends with,I promise would smoke you,she has her Doc as a DVM,does surgerys all the time on people for local main hospital here".

TJ, after I posted, I did wonder if he might have sent similar incoherent pm's to other members who had posted on his knife.
It would appear that timberwolf55 is gone? All of his profile info from under his user name is missing from all of his posts?

Hard to say Phil. I think that he is neither a collector nor an accumulator, found this and thought he had struck pay-dirt. Doesn't understand the three C's of collecting.
