All About Pocket Knives

Hello all,

I want to see all the "REAL" user knives out there that show their colors. Meaning, a used GEC knife that is a true user and nothing added to advance its age. Pretty much use all the time for whatever the need.

I'll start off with my Roughneck. I do not carry this knife since I would need a ballast in the oppositte pocket to keep me from limping to one side. All its use has been around the house. I use it all the time to cut up all my dinner creations, Projects around the house cutting Plastic moldings, Slamming into a garage shelf just to keep it lodged in a board where I can see it and easily accesssed, and many other odd ball things like using the heavy end to bang in smaller nails and what not. Interesting enough the screwdriver tip has been used more than one could know.

After a lot of use I may oil it with Olive oil, only because its readily available. I wash it off regularly in water and put it up back in its sheath without drying it off, its a user right? nothing about this knife has been fabricated for this posting... This knife IMO has been abused

It has been hard to treat this knife as I've done. But now that its broken in no problem. Interesting enough I do have a smidgen,barely noticeable blade wobble when opened. However, It still walks and talks like it did when it was pretty. Its all good since I do own the exact same pattern and Handle material in the protoype which was really one of the first Rednecks.

Oh yeah, why would anyone use a knife like this? Just because its stupid fun, The blade took 30 min to sharpen with the Lansky sharpening system, but when done be very,very careful because it can easily take off a slice of a finger without thinking..

When I think how did they use early pocket knives, I have to think, they were used as needed, way before the collector like myself today......

But I keep the blade a light grey patina with a blade eraser, I use them all but I just like the lighter look of the blade after I use the eraser about once every 2 weeks. JMO

Mine doesn't compare
I've posted my big jack user several times on other threads. I have used and carried it daily since I bought it used from johnnytwoshoes. Both blades have been black with patina from slicing apples, peaches, pears etc. I break down and flitz it every week or so to protect it from rust and to give it back it's shine. The blades after being flitzed show a dullish haze (more so on the cllip due to more use) and the etch is pretty light on the spear now.

I just can't bring myself to abuse it.

As far as an opinion. The 1095 steel is awesome and holds an edge like crazy. It probably hasn't even needed sharpening by most peoples standards but I touch them up to hair splitting every so often. After quite a bit of whittlin' and general use the blades, half stops, and snap are still rock solid.

Great knife. I love the way the micarta looks with some wear.

the ben hogan is my table knife & the pioneer has bone 2 whitetails in addition to other choes. if one cleans his blade immediately they wiil remain somewhat shiny. leftover blood seems to attack the soonest.==HiPower

I like the looks of that Ben Hogan, HP. That amber bone didn't appeal to me on that model at first but it's starting to grow on me.

No winners here, we are winners if we have a GEC::tu:: When I first thought about using this knife this way it was hard because all GEC's are so nice. I've never done anything to it to destroy it. I just use it a lot. The once in awhile I will work some oil oil into the joints and wipe the blade down with it, but often it gets put away dirty.

I think it has a lot to do with how you use them and how much acid is in your skin. I knew a guy back in high school that could just touch somethin once and it would turn.

I knew I was not alone in a user, Glad to see I am not alone to ruin a perfect GEC, (From a collector's) stand point that is. Same pattern as what I display on the roughneck, Very Nice..... These knives were meant to be used too. Although very hard to do for most of us, Myself Included BH Thanks for sharin....

Cuttin' vegetable matter is what stains 1095 in short order. That how JTS gets his patina, right Johnny?

Here are my most used/abused GEC's; these three get used for work. The tip of the wharnie broke off (my fault) and I had to reprofile it. These three have never let me down, although 1095 dulls very quickly cutting fiberglas insulation. They are kept keen enough to sharpen carpenter's pencils to a fine point. I have another dozen or so that get regular duty, but not tough duty. I'll post a photo of them later, but now it's off for the day with the 2007 trapper in my pocket. After using this knife for a few years, I bought another in mint condition to replace it in my collection; I like it that much!

My favorite thing to do with my knives from GEC, pretty as they are, aint just stairing at 'em.
These knives are a joy to use with an edge you can count on, and I count on useing mine as often as I can.
