Any knife that is marked with only Sheffield Steel or Solingen steel or any place "Steel" without any other markings is probably a knock off made in Pakistan or China.
I’d stay away from them.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that, I own it already. It was short cash, so I don't mind, it's a pretty little knife.

Incorrect, read the knife not the tang stamp. The knife is most likely made in Germany for export to the U.S.A. when marked in this manner.

I would date the knife from the 1950-60`s

Thanks, I learn something everytime I post here. That's what it's all about, research and learning. I will do a some research on this little knife, tomorrow at work. Nothing like getting paid while learning.

Correct or not correct I wouldn't invest a penny into a knife with no makers marks unless I had definitive proof of origin.
I'm sure you're probably right as you are a bigger collector than I am but for me, MOST LIKEY isn't definitive enough and is just speculation.
When you here China you think cheaply made.
I've seen knives that were confirmed made in China from that era with Sheffield steel marked on them that were quality made.
Made in China doesn't necessarily mean cheaply made.

JW, I say most likely as most of them were made in Germany some were also made in Austria and in that region of the world.

No speculation on my part at all.

I personally have never seen a pocket knife made in China in the 1950-60`s that was quality made.

If anyone has one can you please show some pictures of it?

I'm going to go out on a limb here(hopefully without my saw)and state that it was probably made right here in the USA.The pattern is a typical,"skeleton" knife made by many companies sans handles.They were sold to jewelers who then added their own handles(scales);usually goldfilled;silver,or base metal.Spaces were provided on the metal handles for the addition of initials.
From the looks of this one I would venture that the Salm Company produced it.They were famous for using abalone and paua shell for handles on knives.A lot of companies handled these in pearl but Salm used abalone almost exclusively.
