Antique Tarry Levigne Folding Knife

Not in the greatest of shape (I'd say fair shape, it seems to be missing some inlay on one side) but I wanted and example of one of his knives. (the price was right at $10.51)

Knife Blade Stamp: Tarry Levigne with a lizzard

I have research Tarry Levigne, just about all I found out was it's a French brand registered in 1883 by Pierre (Peter) Tarry-Levigne.

I did fine out that the "Lézard - pas une salamandre" was around 1898 but you can't believe everthing you find on the net.

Info: Any other info on this knife maker would help, thanks in advance.

Dracc, what you posted:"a French brand registered in 1883 by Pierre (Peter) Tarry-Levigne." is about all I've ever heard about these knives.
I have one similar to yours.
I'll see if I can post a pic.

TARRY LEVIGNE HAWKBILL PRUNER KNIFE

Well I pick up another "Tarry Levigne" knife (see below). I haven't recieved it yet but it looks pretty good.

Begging..LOL: If anyone out there can point me in the right direction to get more history on this person "Tarry Levigne". I would appreciated it. It's driving me nuts (and I don't have far to drive :+), I search and search and NOTHING other than he is French and the knives are very old.

Levine says Pierre Tarry-Levigne was a manufacturer from Thiers, France circa 1864 to 19??

Interesting knives. Got me started looking around and found this on a French knife board - I would say that Google Translator has a ways to go before it is of much use for anything more than comedy routines...

An old folding fin that has long served as a butcher to mark the Livestock ...
This is the knife down, the top one being a fairly faithful reproduction.
Inlays (pearl?) On one side of the handle:
Punch "Tarry Levigne", with a lizard on the blade:
I have traced here: http://www.couteaux-jfl.com/marques.htm . But if you can
tell me more about this brand or model, I'm interested! :D

Fabic specializes in Thiers knives palm cracra called for the noise they made in
Souvre. Make the salamendre known for its inlays of different materials in the
handles of his knives, as you watch the photo.

A new intervention "chiatique" (that's me!)

Make the salamendre

This is not the scoring in the Salamander is the brand lizard. It is sometimes
etched into the beast.
It's always a reptile!

Another mark of a salamander signed .... I can not remember its name.
"Le Perigord, man's country"

the first knife is very close to traditional Spanish knives like this actual

Image

somewhere it's normal because Spanish seasonal workers from the 19th century in France where commonly employed in this country (near Thiers)
Laguiole legend has it that its shape is very inspired by the Spanish navajas

funny the translation from neoczen forum :D

Tarry Levigne Antique Knife

I picked up another Tarry Levigne knife, this one has a locking blade (pull the ring to unlock). The scales/handles seem to be of a bakelite material (developed in 1907 by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland). I snagged this one for 20 bucks. I love the way it locks.

Questions: Since I only paid short cash for it, I would like to clean the blade (only) and use it for an everyday type carry knife. What are your thoughts on cleaning the blade, if I go down that road ? Also is it not cool to clean the blade on this knife ? What is the best method of cleaning the blade, if I go that route.

An after thought: Any idea on the age of this bad boy ?

Thank you,
Draac

The handle material is Horn, possibly cow horn.

I would not clean it too much, but it is your knife and you can make it shine like a new penny if you want to

"Miller Bro`s" on further examination, I think you are correct, the handles are cow horn. I'm just going on what little I know putting the date about the turn of the century. What are your thoughts on a date for this piece of cutlery ?

Also: Looking through my books, It seems like this was the first type of "Locking Blade". Not this knife but the mechanism used to lock a blade, I see it in 18th century knife in my books. Was is the first type of mechanism to lock a knife blade open ? If not, could anyone show a very early locking knife with a different mechanism to lock open a knife blade ? I'm interested in how it was done before this knife I'm showing.

Thank you,
Draac

I cleaned just the rust off the blase and locking mechanism and ring with Naval Jelly. It took the rust off and left the patina on the blade and other metal parts.

Here are a couple of pictures of it after the rust removal.

Dragging up an old thread to post this friction folder I found at a swap meet last weekend. I had never heard of the maker and there’s not a lot amount there about him so this thread was great.
