All About Pocket Knives

This is a nice knife, I think someone cleaned the blade to death. I can faintly read Solingen on the tang. It looks like silver on the handle ?

Here it what was told about the knife when I bought it.

•TANG STAMPS : I CAN FAINTLY SEE SOLINGEN 440 STEEL ON ONE TANG. I AM TOLD THIS WAS MADE BY WINDLASS.
•BLADE LENGTH : 8 1/2 INCHES. 13 1/8 INCHES OVERALL.
•INCHES BLADE WIDTH. 1 INCH THICK.
•PATTERN : LARGE FULL TANG FIXED BLADE ANTIQUE CIVIL WAR STYLE HUNTING, SKINNING, SURVIVAL BOWIE KNIFE WITH ORIGINAL LEATHER SHEATH.
•CONDITION : NEAR MINT.
•DAMAGE : MINOR STORAGE WEAR. TIGHT SURFACE CRACK ON THE BACK HANDLE..
•AGE : UNKNOWN.
•COUNTRY OF ORIGIN : OTHER WINDLASS KNIVES I HAVE SEEN WERE MADE IN INDIA. I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THIS ONE.
•HANDLES : BEAUTIFUL GENUINE SMOOTH NATURAL WHITE BONE SCALES WITH HEAVY BRASS PINS, FANCY EMBOSSED BOLSTERS/FERRELL AND WIDE SILVER CROSS GUARD. SEE PICS.

Questions: How old do you think this knife is ? What type of knife is it (is it correct to be a Windlass Solingen) ?

It's got nice lines and looks like a re-make of the old Sheffield "bowies".

Other than that I can't tell you anything more.

Thanks Willie, it is a nice looking knife, it has a nice feel to it when holding it too.

Not familiar with the Windlass name but here is what I see when I look at it:

The castings on the pommel and behind the cross guard seem to be of better quality than most knives of Indian or Asian manufacture.

The fit of the handle slabs looks pretty good and the material decent.

The blade grinds and profile look to be above average for a mass produced Asian knife.

The sheath looks to be of very good quality(nice even stitching;quality leather).

The only down side I can see is the stamping 440 Solingen Steel.That smacks of Asian manufacture.One reason that it may have been polished that highly is that most knives of Asian manufacture come with a ground finish.If the second reason was to hide the country of origin marks,that would explain the finish as well.

For what it's worth I think it is a nice looking knife regardless of where it was made.
