Some Of My Favorite Country & Bluegrass Songs

I'll kick it off with one by the Statler Brothers named "Maggie". They only released "Maggie" on one album (for those of you who remember albums) called Harold, Lew, Phil & Don, released in 1976. It was available on vinyl and cassette tape but has never been released on CD.

Click here to play "Maggie" by the Statler Brothers ........ (Disclaimer: This works with Windows Media Player. There are no guarantees if some other media player is your default player.)

Post your own favorites or stop back by now and then as I will be adding more as I think of them.

Lacy J. Dalton (born Jill Byrem on October 13, 1946 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania), released her "16th Avenue" album in 1982. I love her voice.

Play 16th Avenue ........

Just released in May of 2010, this is one of the few newer songs I like. It could be that the slight irreverence of the song appeals to my rebellous side. :) Give Billy Currington a try. Maybe you'll like him too.

Play "Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer" ........

Before I give up for today and go do something else and since I titled this thread, Country & Bluegrass, I'd like to stick a little Bill Monroe in here.

William Smith Monroe (September 13, 1911 – September 9, 1996) was an American musician who helped develop the style of music known as bluegrass, which takes its name from his band, the "Blue Grass Boys," named for Monroe's home state of Kentucky. Monroe's performing career spanned 60 years as a singer, instrumentalist, composer and bandleader. He is often referred to as The Father of Bluegrass. <quoted from Wikipedia>

Until recently, while surfing the Internet on a rainy Saturday afternoon, I had forgotten just how good Bill Monroe is. If you don't like Bluegrass, you may not be able to appreciate this. If you do like Bluegrass, he is truly The Father of Bluegrass.

Because his siblings had moved away from their home in Rosine, Kentucky, Monroe lived for about two years with his uncle Pen Vandiver, often accompanying him when Vandiver played the fiddle at local dances. This experience later inspired one of Monroe's most famous compositions, "Uncle Pen," recorded in 1950;

One of my personal favorites:

Play "Uncle Pen" ........

Gimme anything by Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin and Flatt & Scruggs. Will take 99% of Willie Nelson, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard (you know what you're going to get). ET, Lefty Frizzel, Porter Wagoner, Dolly Parten, Johnny Horton are favs. Basically, anything pre 1970, back when country had a twang. Patty Loveless - Woo-Hoo, she's grrrr-ate. The list goes on and on.

Favorite song? Little Bessie, Banks of the Ohio, Rank Stranger, I'll Go Steppin' Too, Hit Parade of Love, Caroline the Teenage Queen, Kentucky Waltz, Blue Moon of Kentucky, etc,etc.

Really dig Emylou's "Roses in the Snow" album. Ricky was a Nash Rambler then, wasn't he? or was it Sam Bush? or both? Can't remember (happens a lot).

My wife can't stand her, but I enjoy Iris Dement's music. :mrgreen:

My wife's first husband fancied himself a bluegrass musician and tortured her with his noise ( I've heard a few tapes he made ::barf:: ) until she just really can't stand any of it. ::disgust::

I've tried on three different occasions to fold, spindle, and mutilate that anal sphincter, but the slippery worm has managed to get away.

His day's comin'. ::nod::

I was going to start, this morning, with the Louvin Brothers version of "In The Pines" BUT my ISP is having FTP issues so it will have to wait.

Geez, T.J., it will take me until the end of the third Thursday of next week to post all those.

T.J. you're a very busy boy this morning. Since you stole all my thunder with the Bluegrass (what did Ricky Scaggs say? "Bluegrass won't raise your taxes." What a great line), I'm going to take a "left turn Clyde" and put up some Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar (sometimes called Hawaiian Blues) by the king of slack key, Ledward Kaapana. From his "Waltz Of The Wind" album Radio Hula ........

I know it's not Country or Bluegrass but I really love this song. It soothes my soul.

Oh no. I wasn't complainin', just explainin'. I'm glad to have the help. I wish some others would pitch in. You've posted some I haven't thought of in many a year and some I've never heard. That Hank Williams number, "Rockin' Chair Money" is a new one to me. Keep it up. This is some good music and Lord knows I like good music.

That "Radio Hula" is a really pretty song and played very well. Thanks a lot for that one. Do you have the "Waltz of the Wind" that you could post? Hank, Sr. recorded that also and maybe wrote it.
