All About Pocket Knives

hi all!

fist time here and first post.

got old (1850-1890) knife and like to know, how much peres have done blades to other manufactures ?

i know age, because other finnish manufactures and blacksmiths have done same kind of knifes and holsters here in that time.
better quality knives handles was made normaly ebenholz and normal knifes by birch, carvings was normaly only in better knifes

Hi Hidalgo, welcome to AAPK! I wish I could answer your questions but I can't, but I can say that is a beautiful knife. Thanks for letting us have a look at it. There are a couple of members who know a lot about European knives, and I'm sure one will be along soon. In the meantime, how about posting some more pictures from your collection. I'll bet you have some nice ones.

i can not sau, that i have collection, but some knives i have and i think some of them are rare too.

here is one from 2. world war, it's made by russian war prisinor

and here is one, made by finnish soldier in front line ( Karjalan Kannas, Finnish area near St Petersburg), there was sometimes "free" time too, because war was continuing almost 4 years.
there is listed battle places of he, holster is made from down shotted soviet fighter (aluminium) , that was most common material to do them, because it was available in that time, leather was more difficult get.

there in holster you can see hes serving regiment, it was first battery of field artillery regiment 3 (1/KtR 3), in that time Finnish field artillery was fastest and most accurate field artillery in the world, there was famous Finnish general Nenonen, who was developing artillery very much.

allmost right, but i uderstand, what you mean

well, here in finland is a lot of those great knifes, made in war time, some of them are true art work.
now in these days they are very popular collecting items too.

most of soldiers had some spear time middle of war time from late 1941 to beginning 1944, because front lines was almost same positions and no big movements there, but daily bombings and artillery activity, some troops got "holidays" , they spent it few kilometers back from front lines, like some kind of reserve.

so they had skills and enough time to spend weeks doing 1 knife, they had only few hand tools, so it wasn't easy make them, they use hammer, file, perhaps metal saw and sharpening stone.
most of decorations was made by sharp punch and hammer, or carving with other knife.

most of handles was special birch with black spots in it.
then they use leather layers with lacker or oil.
bones and horns, what they hunted there.
and almost all parts of crashed soviet airplanes, airplane aluminium was most common material, because it was easy get and easy shape.

Here is a picture of a puukko that belongs to a Swedish friend of mine. His father made it in WWII just as you described. I was made from a Soviet fighter that crashed in 1943.
