Thanks Edge & Perry !!!!!!!!!!! I am sending my first,GEC,back,for some cleaning___the brass liner,on the 735180L (last photo ), shield side,had ""Green stuff"" on the bottom and top of the stag??? e-mailed,GEC ( Chris)--she said,send it in,and we''ll clean it for ya' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ____I had already,been offered a "("full refund,& shipping cost ) from the dealer, who,e-mailed Chris,also,about the problem,but really wanted to keep,the knife. So I am,heading to the post office to mail,it back to GEC,now This is, another ""great example""",of why,I have put my full attention,and focus,on collecting the Great Eastern,knives_______I'll up-date,this,when the knife,is returned_______Monk

PS______the ""Green Stuff"" photos,were taken,after,I rubbed and scrubbed for an hour !!!!

Does anyone know what causes that? Is it perhaps caused by oxidation of the brass liners? Or maybe a chemical reaction between stag and brass?

I ask because I have a couple knives showing slight "hints" of the same thing.

If there is a cleaning technique that anyone knows of, that would be greatly appreciated as well ...

Don't want to have to start shippin my girls off on a regular basis if it is a recurring thing ...

And yes Monk, I agree - Team GEC is top-notch at taking care of us .. they prove it time and again. Gotta love that.

That's what I have heard also Edge (stag and brass). It mostly happens when a stag knife is stored in a leather pouch or sheath, so I would assume it has something with the tanning chemicals or the dyes. There are way to many stag on brass knives out there that don't have that problem............I would think it was exposed to something else.

I'm thinkin' ""bad storage"" with little or no prep' ???? caused the problem,on my knife ( it was some ""old--new stock ) that was just found,and put up for sale----sOOOOOOOO******* as with any brass,you are going to get""green stuff / oxidation"" if it's not oiled or coated with ren-wax or something,before storage,for a lenght of time______that's like the old belt buckles, you could clean,them with Brasso,and they'd shine like new money____I even,tried that,on this knife,but the ""green stuff"' has bled into the stag,scale,and would not come out I have heard mentioned on this site,that a lot of the guys,that clean up the older knives ,will soak,the knife,in mineral oil,over-nite,????? will this clean,stained scales too ???? How about it,Perry ??? You have cleaned up some beauties___what ya' think ??????????

The knives that come in factory tins often develop those
problems.
I guess that tin and brass don't get along too well.
Case put out plenty of knives in factory tins through the years.
I'm sure there are some collectors out there who may unknowingly store their knives in tin boxes/containers.
Doesn't really answer your GEC problem but thought I'd throw it out there.

I worked with a jeweler years ago and we had steamer to clean jewelry, I wonder how that would work? It had a small nozzle that the steam was delivered to from the tank and we would hold the piece under the nozzle with a wood clamp. I'm going to have to try that! I doubt it will penetrate the stag, but it's worth a try.

Take your knife to one of those do-it-yourself car washes.
At the nozzle the water exits those wands at a gazillion miles per hour.
Be careful not to injure your hand.

No offense Wilder but I wouldnt put any knife I have thats worth anything in water. It would get behind the grips and everywhere else and thats nothin but trouble.

Good point!

I was just following up on the steam idea.
Steam would probably generate the same issue.

Of course you could always come home from the car wash and put
your knife in the clothes dryer

Oh well _______it's too late to tell me now,Gino ______cause I took,some dishwashing soap & a toothbrush,to that "'green stuff"' this morning that didn't clean it either_______but I also,cleaned it with mineral oil,and after wiping it dry,__ I blowed it dry,with the wife's, hair blower __________we fish,the river,a lot during the summer,and do a lot of wading,lots of times,we wade up to our chest,in the deeper areas and_my knife is always,in my pocket,but it, gets, a good cleaning and oiling,when I get home. I found out with my Case, CV's____ river water, will spot em' like a Giraffe

For those of you who have forgotten, the name of that green stuff is "Verdigris". It's caused by the reaction of acetic acid with the copper in brass (copper and zinc). You'll see a build up of verdigris on the guard of your sheath knife when it's left in the scabbard. I've heard it's soluble in alcohol. Alcohol is certainly worth a try. I can't see how it would hurt the stag.

If I recall correctly, acetic acid = vinegar … soooo …

Perhaps this small trick can help change your feelings about buying one more sunfish.

When you turn in for the night and your wife is in bed. Bring a glass 1/2 full of water and 2 aspirin. Hand that to her and say here this is for your head-ack. She will be shocked and will say but I don't have a head-ack. Then you tell her GOOD then it's play time. Trust me she will make sure all night long that you will not ever think of that sunfish that you want....

That's a great suggestion except for the fact that I'm single.

I've had my eye on a nice-looking woman at the neighborhood bar and I've been thinkin' about invitin' her over to my place to check out my sunfish collection.

By the way, knives are still cheaper than wives.... but not much.
