A friend of mine, Pam Gadd, was Porter's last female duet singer.

"Frauline", one of the really greats. Really takes me back to my youte. Bobby Helms also had the first hit on the song "Jingle Bell Rock", which was later recorded by Brenda Lee.

My Dad was a big fan of Hag. He had all his albums, and his music was always playing around our house when I was a kid back in the 60s. We lost my Dad in March of this year.

Not much going on today so I was just diddling around on YouTube and found this. It's the first time I've heard of Eva Cassidy but I'm pretty sure I like her or at least her rendition of this song.

I agree, she does a good job on it. Interesting trivia regarding this song. Willie's a great songwriter and although his version of "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" is the best known now, the song wasn't his originally. It was written by Fred Rose and first recorded by Roy Acuff back in the 1940's. A bunch of other folks also recorded it before Willie resurrected it on his Red Headed Stranger album and made it into a "new" hit. Prior to that Willie was primarily a songwriter, pretty much unknown. The song made Willie a household name. I always thought it ironic that the author of so many great hit songs became famous only after singing a song he didn't write.

Yeah, the Red Headed Stranger album (1975) was my first exposure to Willie Nelson. I bought the album because of "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" (even though I'm a life long country fan, I had not heard the song before nor had I heard of Willie Nelson). Played the whole album the first time and didn't like it. Played it again and thought, "well maybe it's not all that bad". Played it a third time and decided, "Hey, this isn't half bad." After the fourth time, I was hooked for life on the album and Willie.

Up until 1975, Willie Nelson languished in anonymity, one of the best kept secrets in Country Music, just writing songs and dabbling around the edges. The Red Headed Stranger album put him on the map with a capital BAM.

I moved to Austin the first time in 1970 and Willie showed up here shortly after I did. Seems like it was about 1972. I THINK it was right after his home burned down in Nashville when he came on the scene here. This was already a great music scene with the Armadillo World Headquarters and scads of other clubs where live music flourished. My personal favorite was The Greasy Wheel band.
It was also the peak of the hippie times and they were in regular conflict with the red-necks or cowboys. Willie vowed to bring the groups together so everyone could peacefully co-exist. That did come to be and I'm not sure if Willie got credit or even if he deserved credit but he sure didn't hurt the process.
A local radio personality and head of a musical/novelty group called The Geezinslaws was Sammy Allred. Willie asked Sammy about cutting the Blue Eyes song and Sammy told him it was too slow and likely would not sell well. It turned out to be the top selling cut off the Red Headed Stranger album where nearly all the songs on the album sold in huge numbers. To this day, Sammy still chides himself about the 'great' advice he gave Willie.
I left Austin in 1975 and returned in 1992. Occasionally since 1992 Willie has 'set in' on the Christmas Eve radio show with hosts being the above mentioned Sammy Allred and Bob Cole. Also on occasion Willie came in between Christmas and New Years day to set in for a good long visit. He is a great guest, with a fine and quick sense of humor. There seems to be no end to the tales he can tell.
Other Christmas Eve guests have been George Bush (#43) and Bill Clinton. I have never been a fan of Pres. Clinton but the time he sat in on the show he was an absolutely great guest. There was nothing political mentioned. He told tales and even sang a very spontaneous and creative version of Jingle Bells. George Bush also sang Jingle Bells and even though accompanied by Larry Gatlin, he was not good on the vocals. He was a great guest but as far as singing goes, he needed to keep his day job.
I heard a comment on local radio, KOKEFM (KOKEFM.com), that they were trying to get both Bush and Clinton lined up for the morning show this coming Christmas Eve. I sure hope they pull it off as it will make for a fun morning.
I have no idea why I got so wound up on the subject this morning. Maybe that coffee wasn't decaf after all.
