Hey, Buck...
Believe it or not, your knife is an electricians knife and the half-moon in the tang is used for stripping wire.

Hello dcgm4 These are very rare. I do have the same knife. My knife has he persons name REOMA with sterling upside down under the name on the front, the back 1895 and the
tang C KIRCHBAM NEWARK NJ. I think that Kirchbam might have been a jewelry maker in Newark.
Newark at one time was a hub for jewelry makers. But not sure just my guess. :D

Hi buck123. Thanks for the info. The "C" from "C Kirchbaum" must have worn off on mine. You're probably right about it being made by a jewelry maker. ::tu::

I picked up this knife a few years ago because one of my daughters lived in Clifton NJ and thought she would like to have it. She gave it back to me a few weeks ago to clean up for her and then a friend who is writing a book on New Jersey knives and cultery asked if I would send pictures of my NJ marked knives for his book and I thought yea I got some plus this Clifton knife. Well it seems that the mark on the knife, J. VAN BAVEL Clifton NJ, is the name of a prominent business man that died in 2007 in Reno Nev. There seems to be nothing about him and the cutlery business so I thought I would revive this thread and see if anyone has any info on him and knives. I have attached a picture of it below. Any info on the man named on the handle would be welcomed also.

Thanks Mike

I picked this one up on ebay the other day and thought it should go in this thread. The stamping on both blades is H & H MANUFACTURING CO BRIDGEPORT CONN. At first I thought it was a H&B but low and behold it is not. Now Goins has a reference to Hatch & Holmes Mfg in Bridgeport under Hatch Cutlery so maybe this is the company?? The back tangs have a series of triangles over a straight line. Anyway I love the thing it has iron hardware and after I oiled it up the action is really nice and smooth. If anyone has anymore info on the maker I would appreciate it.

It does not look like a German made knife.
I am sure it was made in the U.S., the jigged bone handles tell the story.

Very attractive old knife :D

My wife & I just got back from vacation.
I found a couple while we were traveling that might fit here.

A Weske fixed blade. 6-1/4" inches.
Goins says they were in Sandusky Ohio, c. 1946-1952.

Also a Excelsior that has seen better days.

I like the bolsters on this one.

This is a well made knife and really looks good...I think I may have shown it here before. It has Calidad on main blade and has a bow and arrow on other blade.

Very nice looking knife. Is it from Spain? I ask because I believe "calidad" means "quality" in Spanish.

I need to take a close up of the stamp, but both blades are stamped "Hollinger/Fremont/Ohio. The Hollinger is in a semi-circle. I posted it when I found it but no one had any information, so it may be a one hitter. Not the kind of one hitter that comes with a little box though.

ratlesnake75 :

I reckon this means neither of us have a one hitter anymore. Wish my Fabyan had as good of blades as yours. I don;t believe I have seen a handle shaped like this. My book says circa 1890 made in Germany possibly imported by firm in N.Y. Makes no difference as it sure feels good for a hundred twenty years old.
