All About Pocket Knives

Not everyone knows this but I am a picker from way back. I started in the fourth grade and never had a lesson. Learnt by ear and watching others. Can't read a lick of music. I have played in a number of bands but gave that up when I told my wife that if I don't make it in two years to something better, I'll hang it up. Well, never ever developed beyond the local bars and family matters seemed more important. Played all kinds of music but Bluegrass and County was my foundation. I own several guitars and can get a tune out of most anything. Of course my dogs are my best audience. The always come lay at my feet when I play. Rarely criticize, but then again they don't clap real well either P.S. My wife knows that if Emmie Lou Harris came to town, oh well she wouldn't want an old knife geezer anyway

and most anything with a fiddle, banjo, and mandolin in front of a hot picking flat top.

I was talking about my own stupidity. I tried to post a video but still can't get the hang of it, it just showed the [youtube] etc............................................... when I tried to post! Not sure what i'm doing wrong. I reread through the thread explaining the how to's I will just leave it up to you guy's.

Sometimes using the YouTube tab works and sometimes it doesn't. To get the link just go to the YT song you want to post and left click the web address to highlight it then right click on it and a drop down menu will appear. Left click on COPY. Go to the reply/post box and left click where you want the link to appear, then right click. Another drop down menu will appear, left click on PASTE and there you have it.

Here's a vid of one of my favorite Bluegrass instrumentals. Road to Columbus written by Bill Monroe and fiddled by my friend Gil Benson. The young man on the guitar is Michael Cleveland. Michael was born with problems that probably would have caused him to be aborted today. Michael was born blind, with a cleft pallet, nearly deaf and with a spinal curviture. Michael turned out to be an accomplished musician, primarily a fiddle player, but any other instrument too. Michael went on to be voted best Bluegrass fiddler nine years in a row, among other awards, by IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association). So then the old saying is true: "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get".

No, but I like it a lot and may have to learn it. I've heard the song before but can't remember who did it. We do one Civil War song, Lorena, but do it as an instrumental.

John Duffy passed in 1996, a terrible loss for Bluegrass music. To me, the Seldom Scene will never be the same.

Monroe will always be my music hero, there's just something special about the rough edges he put into and kept in Bluegrass music. His abilities and imagination with the mandolin are genius. Who would ever think to cross tune the mandolin to a C#m and write a song in that tuning ("My Last Days on Earth") In comparison to today's slick mandolin players Monroe could never compete, the new players like to put as many notes in as they can fit, "dazzel you with their foot-work" if you please. Monroe believed in keeping it simple and staying to the melody. Bill never forgot who bought the gas for his bus. I've seen him finish a show, hand his mandolin off to one of the other players and go out into the crowd and stay there until he had shaken hands with everyone who wanted to shake and stand for pictures until the last shutter clicked. He was truly a fan of his fans. Still today, in a traditional Bluegrass band, Monroe's line up of mandolin, guitar, banjo fiddle (sometimes two fiddles) and up-right bass is the standard. For many years he would not allow an electric bass on his stage at Bean Blossom.

Jerry! Glad you posted the Old Crow Medicine Show song Wagon Wheel. I was driving the junior varsity football teem back from their game and this came on the radio. I never heard it before. The boys asked me to turn it up and I cranked it, they started to sing along and were really good. This makes long bus trips really enjoyable. ftd
