Abalone Celluloid looks nice. ::tu::
I have a Case Paua XX Brothers Mid Folding Hunter 81265LC SS.

I am still waiting for an answer.

Is this a Cell handle or a Shell handle?

Will a shell handle gas out?

Hi justold. I don't know the answer to the first question. To the second question; if it is shell it won't 'gas out'. The 'gassing' is a characteristic of the unstable composition of celluloid which I believe is a petrolium by-product. Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you have a great day :) s-k

justold, that looks like genuine Abalone to me. Its a natural shell material like mother of pearl. It will not gas out.

Kool thanks smiling-knife and jfarmer; that is what it is. but I think some handles that look like Abalone and are not genuine Abalone.

Rough Rider RR350 Mini Canoe Im Abalone is a cell handle.

The reason I am bring this up is many people here still store all of their knives in one safe place. I am trying to get more collectors to store Cell handles in a diffrant safe place. I have gone throught my entire knife collection again and found 2 more knives the I did not think were Cells but sure they are now. Buck Creek Congress Solingen Germany Duck and, C. Platts Son Taper Blue Ice Cell Handle. So if I slip up many other just might too. If I can stop one real good knife from getting hurt bad from a Cell gas-out Just because the collector placed it in the same box with his Stag handles then I fell I helped a lot.

Thought I would bring this back to top again. Nice thread.
Not much of a knife an old shapleigh diamond edge with broken blade. Been looking for it for a month now. IMO the cel is gorgeous without being bright. Notice how it is not symetrical on front and back. No rhyme or reason to pattern.

Mossdancer ; if that knife was made in the 1970's it might be called Psychedelic or lava lamp what ever it was called it was a KOOL knife for the time .:wink: :wink: I think it seen some rope smoken parties.

Just one Q for you ?
Did you find it in a celluloids drower or box of old knives ?
Or was it mixed in with just old knives ?????

Here is an amazing example of old celluloid. This is a NYK Hammer Brand (courtesy of mossdancer). It has one good blade, but the handles are amazing! The celluloid has a wood grain effect on the sides nut is red on the edge of the scaled. Amazing old celluloid.

muskrat man ; 10 4 on that good budy. Yellow Cells are super. :wink:

orvet ; Yes it's getting to me that Hammer Brand Knives and Cell handle are becomming my fav. But I don't have a one yet. No one wants to sell the nice looking Hammers. Why is that? ::dang:: ::dang::

If I get real good at haggleing I might try to get one hammer from our Hammer KING here. ::ds:: ::ds::

P.S. Bryan thanks for the added icons too ::blah::

thats a nice handled old hammer, I like that cell. Do you have plans to try and re-blade it?

At the moment I am hanging on to the Hammer the way it is because it is the only example of the NYK Hammer tang stamp.

I thing the celluloid is pretty enough to justify keeping it. :mrgreen:

Dale;
You aint seen nuttin yet. I been hanging on to this for an occasion.
I think the ship is the RMS Franconia l. If so she was sunk by a German torpedo in October of 1916. This knife as I understand was a premium or award to a passenger for winning a tournament possibly shuffleboard.
It an ALFRED WILLIAMS +EBRO+ The + represents a Maltese cross.

Edit for spelling

Very nice mossdancer. I really like knives with a 'history' There was a series of 3 or 4 ships with that name. If from the original, that is a great find. Here is a link with a little more info and a model of the ship.
