Elmer Keith was definitely one of a kind. I remember seeing a magazine article on a gun he designed that was patterned after a Colt .45 but chambered for .45-70 rounds. He had developed a shooting stance for firing it long distance that really works. From a reclining position on one elbow with the opposite knee raised and the pistol laid alongside the knee and aimed.
Many years later I purchased a similar pistol(a Phelps with an 8 1/2" barrel(cut down from 12")chambered for .45-70. Firing a 500 grain slug out of that was like trying to hold onto a scalded cat. Fired three rounds out of it and sold it the following week.

I hear you! Fired one shot from my Son's .454 Casull revolver and that was enough. Not much blood, but lotsa swelling. (There is little additional knowledge to be gained from the second kick of a mule). I really enjoy shooting small calibers, no macho issues here.

I used to have a thing for large caliber pistols. My first was a Mk1 Detonics in .45 ACP. Slightly smaller than a Colt Officer's model(made from a cut down M1911 frame).Still have it and it a handful to shoot. My next one was a Model 29 S&W with 4 way sights and a 10 5/8ths in. barrel. Sighted in for 200 yards. Got a Marlin 336 lever chambered in the same caliber(.44 Magnum) and still have that. Got rid of the Smith and bought the Phelps. Also picked up a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Long Colt.Still have that one but never fired it.

There is a major cultural difference between Canada & USA when it comes to hand guns. I hunt and have 3 hunting rifles (308, 30-06 & 22). I have never owned a hand gun and i do not know anyone who does own one. If i lived in USA most likely i would own a hand gun as would most of my friends. Same guy, same beliefs but living in a place where the culture has a different attitude toward guns.
Different about knives as well. There is very little interest in knives in Canada. A Canadian knife collector is a very rare 'bird'. And as far as i know we have no laws about carrying knives other than not in a Court of Law or an establishment serving alcohol. Anywhere else in Canada, carry any knife you want, but don't get caught with a hand gun if you don't want to spend at least one night in jail.

How about Canadians and automatic knives KJ?
I was under the impression that any knife that opened either by gravity or push button were banned from import there. Are you allowed to carry them there? Or is it just import restrictions...

I regularly ship knives to a buddy in Toronto, and all of the autos have to have the springs removed, and shipped separately, and anything that "flicks" open, I have to torque down the pivot screw(s).

I can certainly appreciate what y'all are relating. I shot my ex-S-I-L's S&W Magnum .500 and half way through one cylinder the fun was all done. Two rounds made me seriously consider whether I wanted to pull the trigger one more time.

Ken you are correct. Canadians are not supposed to have auto knives including flickable. I was thinking of traditional style folders & fixed blades of which you can carry whatever you want.

No knife laws in Wyoming. None. Concealed carry of firearms is fine. No permit necessary if a resident. Here is my new Randall that I am taking to Nebraska this weekend for pheasant hunting. Never done this; I am excited.

Nice shotgun Cal. Be sure to post pictures of your hunt. I've gone up to S. Dakota hunting. I'm sure you'll have a blast.

That is one fine looking field piece you have there Cal. The birds won't stand a chance.

Beauty Randall but i have never understood such a large knife for birds. I have shot big ole turkeys and find a slender clip blade as on a Schrade 194OT to be just right for eviscerating.
I hope you will post here when you get back and let us know how Randall vs. pheasants went. (note, plural, lotsa birds)

I was just outbid on an Othello fixed blade 2 nights ago. That one was a stag handle skinner I think... It wasn't expensive, I just missed the buzzer due to dinner.
Is Alton Wingen Jr. the designer of THOSE two, and Othello the manufacturer or is it a deeper relationship?

Anton Wingen/Othello is the 'Schrade/Case/Buck/Western' of Deutschland! And rightly so. Good stuff!
