Post by Papa »

I just bought a knife and hopping someone can date it for me. It is described above, clean and good snap all blades. Handle is in good shape no cracks, brown jig handle. I got it for $12.50, hope I did not pay to much, I will carry and use it. THANKS

Any good working Schrade is worth more than what you paid for yours.

She will last a long time if you do not looses her.

Just remember she is a cutting tool and not a pry bar....

The 834 is an old pattern that predates the number change in 1947.
The old model number for it was 8343 prior to 1947.
I don't know how far back the pattern goes prior to 1947.

It was apparently a popular pattern because it is the pattern on which the 34OT, (Old Timer) is based.
The 834 was made until 1983. The 34OT was introduced in 1964 and made until Schrade closed in 2004.
That makes it one of the longest running patterns in the Old Timer line. Only the 8OT & 108OT were made for more years than the 34OT.

What is the name on the tang stamp? Is it Schrade or Schrade Walden?
If it is Schrade, it would have been made after 1973, up to and including 2004.
It the name is Schrade Walden it would have been between 1947 & 1973.

Perhaps if you post a picture of it & include the tang stamp, we can narrow the date range a bit.

I hope this helps,

Well, That tang stamp really doesn't narrow it down any more than we already knew.
According to B.K. Brooks list of Tang stamps, it was used 1946 to 1973. So we are no closer than we were.
However the 1947 catalog lists the handles as bone stag, which was jigged bone. So it appears yours was made after they changed from the bone stag.
Doing a bit of research I find that the 834 was listed as "Genuine Bone Stag" in a 1961 flyer and as "Unbreakable STAGLON" in a 1962 flyer.

Based on that I would narrow the date of your knife to 1962 to 1973. That is a 12 year span & that is pretty close for a Schrade product! Unless there is something else we can find to narrow the date further, I think that is as close as we can get on this one.
