I finally got the blond handled one cut back to good steel and decent bevel set.
It's got a smile now.


I got it off ebay and the sellers pics didn't quite show the damage and he didn't really mention it.

I was hoping for better but a bit of work and it'll be a good user I think. The Wosty was a total waste. The scales were junk too. The paddle strop can be reworked with some new leather at some point in the future.
Here's what it looked like when I got it.


About two thirds of the way through the butchering.


It's closer to a 6/8 than a 7/8 but averages around 13/16ths.

Scales are really clear horn. I soaked 'em in mineral oil for a couple of days. Only have two small beetle bites.



They're built with no wedge.


And a shot of the back side that had some rusty fingerprints and spots. I left the front pretty much as found to conserve what was left of the etch.


I need to get my drill press from my dad and haul it home along with my big grinder so I can get serious about playing with these things. Dad's 87 and he doesn't use my drill press anymore and my big grinder is a friend's Dad's house. His Dad is 93 and he's decided he's done playing in his shop too. LOL

You ever come across any decent razor hones in your travels? I've found one over here that was totally used up with about a half inch belly in a three fourths inch stone. Wouldn't have been anything left by the time it was trued back to flat.

I've had some of the ones we traded for honed by a "master honemeister" for a trade on some stuff. That BIG FR in the back of that pic I honed myself and it's the smoothest shaving of any of the shave ready razors I've got. LOL

The guy that honed mine was good and his edges look like mirrors, but they don't cut any better than mine does. Oh well was a cheap experiment.

Gee, Willie. You should have said that before we went to the Dalton show. There were numerous mint conditioned hones available that had other than highly collectable names on them.

I'm just looking for a few to use. Those hones with the BIG names on 'em, bring lots of bucks to the guys that want set 'em on a shelf.

My hones are old hand me downs. They work, but I was just looking for a pretty slick bench type stone to the final finish with.

It's razor again. Honed it up on some Naniwa's after setting the bevel on a 1K chosera. FInish honed it on a 12K naniwa. Shaves SMOOTH!!




Clear horn in those handles.


Gonna have to get me a set of those Japanese stones if I keep playing this game.

Looking good. I've got three razor hones. Two US ones and a Belgian one that split along the natural grain of the stone and some one glued it back together. Still has a good top surface and a rather battered box that they glued it into as well. I see the leather covered paddle hones all the time if you want some. I've got a couple more razors too if you have trading goods available.
