Camillus 23

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Camillus 23

Post by FRJ »

I like these knives. Short line and long line Camillus. I like the size (4 1/8") and the two blades.
They are a great coat pocket knife in my opinion.
These two have problems with the scales. I suspect others do too.
Anybody have any Camillus 23s?

I don't have one but it is a Camillus pattern I have long admired. It's big and stout and it has a fat spear blade, in other words it is a good honest work knife, nothing elegant or pretentious about it. Yours look like they would be candidates for rehandling with some kind of tough, sturdy wood.

They sure are as you describe, trail. Certainly sturdy and unpretentious.
I would like to get them recovered. I was thinking of a linen micarta. This celluloid or what ever it is, is on its way out.

Joe,
Those both look like celluloid handles.
The one with stripes is called "French Ivory", which is a pattern of celluloid.
I have several Camillus #23s. I am going to customize one with stag for the show in April.
It is a great pattern, a nice hand full of knife! ::tu::

Remington did make a R1225 that looks much the same as the Camillus 23.
I don't know about the Remington pictured, what it is or what it is not.
The Remingtons that I looked up had shields two knives both different shields.
Sargent listed the R1225 as 4 1/4" closed.

Check the alignment of the numbers on the knife in question . All of the Remingtons that I have ever seen never had the #'s stamped individually . ::shrug:: However , I have seen many Camillus / Remington "conversions" .

Here is what I think is the Boker USA equivalent to the 23. Knive is 4 1/4" closed with French Ivory handles.

Bob I agree with you 100% I noticed the #'s. I wanted everyone to know that Remington did also make the knife.

TJ, great looking knife. It is interesting that Camillus, Remington and Boker all made this pattern.

That's the pattern some call a "watermelon jack". I'm also a fan and have been trying to buy one off and on for some time. I can tell you they don't go cheap (my price range). They seem to be quite popular.

I love the #23 too - right up there on my "Wish List" of Camillus knives I'd like to have - but like Jerry I have not been able to snag one at a price I could afford. I am also a little picky - I want one with the swedge blade like Joe pictured first - makes it even more difficult!

Here is a #23 I put some stag on a while back.
I think it wears the stag well. ::nod::

The cell handles (and the price) are what hold me back on the 23s. I'd say the stag solves one problem. Unfortunately it exacerbates the other problem. Oh, well. Some really smart guy once said, "There ain't no free lunch".

Another fine job, Dale.

That's the one Dale!! Jerry, I don't mind the celluloid handles - I have me a sneaky feeling that some warthog ivory would be a real nice replacement, should I ever be able to get my hands on one!

Oh yeah. Warthog ivory would be just the ticket for a 23. The donor would have to be a big old tusker, don't ya think?

Probably need to be a big old tusker, just because you need to get a long enough piece that is straight enough. But sometimes you find them with straighter tusks. I need to check but I am almost sure I have one or two that might fit the bill.
