Ulster Old Timer

Post by 313 Mike »

Schrade 808 Old Timer 58OT 002.jpg
Just took this picture today of my Ulster Old Timer 58OT. I've had it since I was a kid and it's been pretty much everywhere I've ever been over the years. Amazing thing is, this knife spent quite a few years residing in my tackle box, and never developed any rust issues! Blades are dark with patina but still keep an edge. It's not the every day carry anymore and spends most of it's days now comfortably at home, but got out in the woods with me today for old times sake, and managed to get a few cuttin' tasks accomplished too!
From the info I've gathered, this knife was produced between 1960-1966, and was part of the Prince Albert tobacco promotion. I've had it for so long that I don't remember exactly who gave it to me, perhaps an uncle who smoked Prince Albert. I believe a relative has recently found me a Prince Albert can with the Old Timers photos on the front, so I look forward to having that piece to accompany my 58OT.
Anyways, thought I would share the pic of a trusted old battle scarred companion with some folks that could appreciate it!

Here are two articles about the Prince Albert knives-

You can read the story at these two links.
The first was written in 2002 and the second in 2006.

Mike, here is a brother to your knife, my Prince Albert 58OT. My Granddad gave this knife to my father, who had it in his tackle box for 30+ years, my Dad gave it to me a couple of years ago. I am still looking around for a Prince Albert tin to display with my OT.

E bay has the prince albert old timer cans listed from between 9.99 up to 30.00 depending on condition of the can. My dad, who is in Florida and knew I was looking for one, left me a cryptic phone message the other day about running into a certain "prince" that I've been looking for, and maybe, just maybe, he will have this certain "prince" for me when he returns from Florida in mid March, ....So I'm not sure if he found a banged up one or a nice clean one, but either way it will be a keepsake since he tracked it down for me.
Thanks for posting the link to the story, it seems the 58OT is the one that is most commonly available nowadays, would be cool to accumulate the trio some day.

I have the Barlow & a beat to hel_ CampKnife. Still looking for a close-to-mint one & the 580T. When complete, I plan to display them in a shadow box with the tin. But other items are ahead of them on the wish-list.

I like that idea of the shadowbox with the trio of knives and the prince albert tin. Only problem with that is my wife would never let me put it up anywhere except down in the deepest part of the basement, or in my closet! It would be a nice way to show off the set though for certain. I will probably place the tin strategically on the top of my knife box so as to give it a place of prominence...

I have been very fortunate to have gathered up several Tins in great condition. One still has the tobacco in it with the order form for the knives.

I do have a MINT 58 OT, a very Good Camp knife and a good Barlow. I display them in a wooden box with a glass front. I have placed 2 of the tins in the box, one on each end to show both sides of the tins and then placeded the knives in between the tins. I'll have to get a picture and post it for you guys!

I also came a cross a VERY GOOD condition 58OT with the ACE HARDWARE etching on the blade.

My pictures do not compare to a lot of those posted, but, you get the idea. The last knife posted is a 58 OT and it ahs the Ace Hardware Etch on the main blade...unfortunately it doesn't show up in the picture.

I was fortunate to buy the three knives with the can (and insert inside) for $50 two years ago on ebay.
The shadow box is a great idea as a way to display the set.

I see you have both tobacco tin graphics; the plain front and the one with the Special Offer graphic on the front. ::tu::
I think the backs are the same on both tins.

As an old tobacco tin collector I notice things like that.

I like the way the ad clearly shows a 'stockman' & states 'whittler'. Maybe at the time, the term 'whittler' had more advertising value ?

I started this thread about 4 1/2 years back in honor of my longest held pocket knife that I have had since I was a boy...I attempted to chronicle a bit of its history in the first post on page 1. ...I recently found a pristine unused version of the same Ulster Old Timer 58 OT drifting in the Bay for a great price, and now I have a user I can carry, quite happy about that! Here they are together. ..
(Obviously the coloring on the delrin is a bit difgerent, but other than that it's a match..)
