A nice old KA-BAR......

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

Anybody got any history on that dog head?

When did it come into use and why? How long was it used?

Obviously I don't know a thing about it, but would like to learn. Thanks.

The shield was first used in the early 1920's if I recall correctly on a variety of knife patterns and re-introduced in the mid-1970's on a pair of stag handled folding hunters(1&2 blade)as well as their Bicentennial trapper which featured red, white and blue laminated scales.I have a KA-BAR brochure somewhere that gives a good capsule history of the company;I'll see if I can dig it out and post it.

Thanks for that, knife7knut. I have wondered about that for a good while. I hope you can find the KA-BAR brochure.
I'll bet many others would like to know more about the dog head too.

That's a real fine knife you have there.

mine gives a patent date of 1923. was in a reprint of old ka-bar knives years back. these are real collectable & the only knife i remember that had a notch in bolster for tit projection to lock in.--HiPower the newer ka-bar collectors club knife is shown for comparison.
