Cattaraucus Combo knife

Post by Graham »

Hi gang. I am new to the site. I am not a collector but have inherited a pocket knife that I believe to be rare, would like to sell, but have no idea as to a fair value. It is a Cattaraucus Combo Knife with wrench (pre-1918), no blade pattern number but it says "Patent Applied For" on the wrench. It is in good condition appearing not to have been used much, if at all. No box or papers of any kind. I just learned this much from surfing the web. I would appreciate any help from an expert on these type of pocket knifes. Thanks.

Welcome
If you post a pic or two of the knife it would be helpful.

Your wrench knife is often called the Gater wrench knife because of the unique wrench jaws. I own two of them as well as 5 of the other Cattaraugus wrench knives.

I looked at the picture you posted and it looks like the punch blade may have been replaced on the knife. I can't tell for certain from your picture but I'm fairly certain the bottom bolster pin has been replaced which usually means a blade has been replaced.
Are there any cracks or chips in the handles and both blades stamped cattaraugus Cutlery co. over Little Valley?

No nicks or chips in the handle. Yes the company name is on both blades over Little Valley NY. I see no sign of repair. It appears to have been used very little. The teeth on the wrench are still sharp. No nicks on the blades.

You need to post another picture showing a closeup of the bottom bolster. In the picture you posted the pin appears to have been replaced. It may not look like a repair to someone who is not experienced with knives but it stands out like a sore thumb to someone who is experienced. It is still a nice knife but based on your one picture it has definately been messed with.

Here is a picture of my two gater wrench knives. Notice that the bottom bolster pin is not visible on either knife. On your knife the bolster pin appears to be protuding above the bolster.

As for the bolster pin. It is as flush as can be.

Looks good. It just didn't look good in the first pic you posted. Nice knife.
