Trick Knife
Trick Knife
Just scored this on the 'Bay. An Imperial Trick Knife or Magicians Knife. JohnnieRotten posted one of these a while back and since then I have been looking for one that looked in good shape. It's certainly not the Henckles that Johnnie posted but it is U.S. made.

Re: Trick Knife
What is the trick to it?
(Case has the different handles - not real tricky)

Re: Trick Knife
Well, I think this is the way JR explained it. The blade has no nail nick. To open the blade you have to hold the knife perpendicular to the groung and push the blade in which releases a blade catch and the blade opens. To close you reverse the direction of the knife (rotate 180 degrees from the opening position) and close the blade and it locks in. Or something like that. I'll know better when I have it in hand. Bottom line, it will not open as a conventional PK.

uyou can shake it end to end or flip it and it will unlock and lock. You have to fiddlearound with it but it will come easy after some practice

Re: Trick Knife
Hold knife with blade tip down, push blade closed, it will lock. Hold tip up, push down on the blade, and it will unlock and open.
I've never seen one with stainless handles.. Pretty cool TJ. I wonder if they are solid or shell handles? Mark

These knives are great fun to hand to someone and ask, "will you open this knife for me?"

Re: Trick Knife
Case has some modern knives they call a Magicians knife. Basically one side is red bone and one is green bone....or one side is pearl and one side is black pearl for example.tjmurphy wrote:Pen & Toothpick wrote:What is the trick to is?

Thank you everyone for explaining how the knife works.
Re: Trick Knife
Well Johnnie, I guess you know that you are the one that started my search for one of these. Thanks a lot.

Re: Trick Knife
Reckon why Case would do that? When C.F. Martin Guitar introduced the D-35, which is a 3-piece back vs a standard 2-piece back, they did it to use up the scrap Brazilian Rosewood that they had on hand. Is this why Case did it or is it as a novelty??

Re: Trick Knife
TJ, is there a difference in quality of sound between the Martin's three piece and two piece backs?

Re: Trick Knife
It's tough to say. Generally, the 3-piece back D-35 has a deeper tone, more bassy, but this is probably due to the fact that they have lighter top bracing. So, in order to answer your question, everything would have to be equal with the exception of the back, and I don't know if Martin makes that model.Knife Nut wrote:TJ, is there a difference in quality of sound between the Martin's three piece and two piece backs?

Well I got the knife today and it's a really neat piece. The handles are held on by tabs and are separate from the liners. I guess that makes them "shell"? though they feel very solid.

Cool find, Skip, and a nice, old thread. TJ & Johnnie are missed.
I've picked up a couple over the years. The top Imperial has the different colored shell scales.

That knife is part of a "magic trick" that was sold in the 1950's.Here is a picture of the box and the instructions with the knives as shown. I posted these in the other thread on secret knives.1967redrider wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 1:44 am
