GOT SHIELDS?

Post by Miller Bro's »

I don`t know if this has been done before. I thought it would be nice to see as many different pocket knife shields as possible, especially the one`s with factory engraved advertising. Also if anyone has an unusual shaped shield those would be nice to see as well! I have shown a few below to get started. Let`s see those SHIELDS! :D

Robeson did use a PocketEze shield after WWII, as evidenced by the shield illustrated below. This one is on a post war, two blade, black composition handled serpentine jack.
The tang stamp has the word, "SHUREDGE" in block letters, not script, indicating post 1948 production.
There was no red background on this shield.

Most Robeson knives made after WWII had a ROBESON marked shield. Initially, the "shield" was simply impressed into the black composition handles and filled with white paint.

Later, an oval nickel-silver ROBESON shield was used. Most strawberry bone handled knives had this shield.
The shield in the photo is on a strawberry bone handled, four blade congress pattern knife.

I omitted two of the older shields in the previous post. Robeson shielded some of their four blade scout-utilities with a shield that read, "SCOUT".

They also made a smaller, junior sized scout-utility that had a shield that read, "OUTING".

An example of each is below.

Robeson, like other manufacturers, made knives for other corporations, and even other knife manufacturers.

Below are some knives made by Robeson with Robeson tang stamps, but shields that advertise other companies or organizations.

The bottom photo shows a Ka-Bar shield on a four blade scout-utility. The blades are marked KaBar, but the knife was made by Robeson and has their proprietary can-opener/cap-lifter and screw-driver blades.

There are some great old and new shields showing up in this thread. There has to have been hundreds, if not thousands, of differently marked shields used on just American made knives.

If we start adding unmarked shields, this thread could get right crowded.

We could make a case for creating a pictorial data base for American pocketknife shields.

Charlie, There seems to be alot of different shields used over the years. I agree with you, starting a pictorial data base for these shields would be a great idea! How about all you other collectors in AAPK land, what do you think? I know there are others out there that have some unusual and interesting shields to show. Let`s see them! :)

I think the data base thing is a good idea. I would love to see good larger pictures of the Case shields, tall "S" short "s" and the older case tested and earlier, the small differences that would help date knives. I know about Garys article, that is a big help to me. He could not cover everything so it would be nice to have more.

Hi, Testcase nice shields, Like the steamship one. Stockman, let Gary know about this thread, maybe he can post some pictures of Case shields, with the dates they were used. Charlie did a fine job listing his Robeson knife shields. I have already used the thread to identify some Robeson knives I had! If there are more specific brand collectors out there, please add to the growing list of shields used by your favorite manufacturer. When I list a new picture of a shield I will also now include the knife manufacturer, please do the same. I did not do this at first and some people contacted me to find out who made the knife. ::doh:: Here are a few more old knife shields.
