Help! My ZT301 is rattling!

Kershaw began its foray into the knife business sometime during 1974. The company was originally based in Portland Oregon, but most early knives were manufactured in Japan. The first US manufacturing plant was opened in 1997 & the company currently offers knives made in the U.S., Japan, & China. Pete Kershaw (an ex Gerber salesman) started the business.

Help! My ZT301 is rattling!

Post by aux80 »

I'm starting to hear a rattling sound in my ZT301. I watched a video on YouTube several months ago where a guy took his 301 apart. He talked briefly about the tension bar rattling when it's loose. I figure that's exactly what is happening with my knife.

If anyone has experience with this, I'd seriously appreciate any tips. I know the bar sits in grease inside the knife, so I guess I need to re-grease it. Which grease is recommended?

This video will tell you every thing you need to know about taking your 301 apart. It's easy. I've done it several time. I use lithium grease for the torsion bar. Use a lot. Don't be afraid to use to much. You can send it in to ZT and they will be happy to do it for you. Plus they sharpen it for free. Their warranty service is the best.

I know Kershaw would service it for free, but I'd rather do it myself. I guess I'm just funny that way. As far as sharpening, my Sharpmaker takes care of that. ::groove::

So the guy in the first video recommends Vaseline.

Is there any reason I shouldn't use Vaseline to grease it up?

Just keep in mind that Vaseline is flammable.

So are hot Cheetos! Can you believe people still eat them anyway?

I'll keep my knife, and my Cheetos, away from any open flames.
