2 different color covers on 1 #530 stockman

Have an Old Cutler Stockman #530 with a black ( Delrin ?) cover on one side, and a clear cover on the other. Any ideas ? Still figuring out how to load pics. Thanks,Steve

Old cutler 3 blade stockman with different color covers on same knife. OK ..maybe this time.... Yaaayyy, got 3 on there ! So why 2 different covers ? Any thoughts ?

Man oh man.."Houston,...we have a serious problem here"....
The top two photo's are clearly our (Colonial) "Old Cutler" 3-blade stockman #530.
This side was clear covered and it appears someone took the time to add a million rivets to this side! This is the first indication to me that this knife has been tampered with.

My personal concern is the pocket (master) blade on all three photo's is NOT consistant!! Please take a very close look folks at the master blade in pic#1, then go to pic #3 and see the differances...they are two different blades!!!!
Pic # 3 shows me a # 720 Barlow master blade, NOT a # 530 master blade!!!!!
Before I make any final assesments, I would very much like to see a reverse shot of photo # 3, if you please sir.....

It's the same knife/same blade. Bought it at a yard sale in Jamestown , RI, 20 years ago. Posting the requested pics .

Yup! Got it now....it was a bad angle of the pocket blade before!! Sorry for doubt, sir...It's definately a Colonial # 530 Old Cutler and it was either custom made at the factory or after it was purchased...this particular knife may be rare but was NEVER mass produced by us!

Thanks Bobby; Forgot to point out: Ref. pic. #s 5 &6. On the clear side at the second "rivet" back from the master blade end, you can see an enlarged hole in the liner, like a 4th cover rivet. The xtra hole is only on the one side. Any thoughts ?

Hey Stac'....Very good question my friend and you just happened to ask the right guy for the right answer..
Let's start here. Every and any stockman or jack knife type ever made consists of two "pin on" rivets, located near the bolster's. Some folks use glue, others, use different applications but sooner or later, something holds the covers to the liners.
The third and obviously the most important pin, or nail is the "center pin". Clearly, without this nail there would be no tension and therefore, the knife wouldn't work; as far as walk and talk...Useless..

Now let me explain the only reasoning I can see for that big rivet down and behind the pin-on rivet. In that spot on all our # 530 "Old Cutler" right liners was a large "location hole". This was an important part of hub and die blanking....
Tools were designed to accept auto feed steel or brass from the roll on big cradles that feed the steel into the press and internally, into the die itself. On all and every set of tools was a pair of "guide pins on each side of the tool...to help keep the steel or brass stock as straight as possible..

Only a press operator's ear was the most valuable thing in the blanking room because if a guide pin broke, and then two, the sound will tell you something is wrong and IMEDIATELY shut the press down via two big red buttons!!!
The auto clutches would make a shreek...run down your spine man..!
If the press was not stopped in time....a $ 100,000 tool was toast! Bad, bad....

I'm happy to say in all my years on Colonial's presses, I never ruined a tool!!!
You guys really need to buy my book!! The fortunate ones already have...
