blade "peek"

Post by millern »

Does anyone have suggestions on addressing "blade peek" on switchblades, where the blade tip is above the liner when locked closed? I'm prepared to dis-assemble an old auto to attempt repair of this issue.
Thanks.

There are a couple of reasons a blade peeks.
Wear on the sear, and wear on the sear notch or hole.
Sometimes, you can re-seat the sear by holding the blade fully closed, and lightly tapping the sear down with the lever in the "locked" position.
Also, a loose pivot can contribute to blade peek.
If you take the knife apart, the sear hole on a LL needs to be closed by moving metal.
Lever lock sears are difficult to repair, and if severely worn will have to be replaced.

So, adding metal to the seat hole via a careful spot weld and then re-filing the opening would be one solution?

If you are a good enough welder. Few are.
It's usually easier to just close the sear hole a little by moving metal around.

Thanks, Bill! My welding skills are not the best, especially for such a tiny area! I'll try a small hammer and a punch to carefully address the sear hole.
