some cyro info

Post by HiPower »

cryo is'nt new--military was doing some at least from the 50s.basic advantages are particle size reduction, & stress from tempering. very little advantage on simple carbon alloys but is really a plus on higher more complex steels; especially high chrominun mixtures.some custom makers have been doing liquid nitrogen cycles & sometimes several nitro cycles on different blades. this is not a simple process ; thought by many to be just sticking a blade down into nitro. when done correctly it can improve edge holding by 100% & even more in some cases. i know makers that do as many as 3 cryos & 4 tempers on some of the "super steels". the really technical facts about this process are beyond my knowledge. nitro can really improve many alloys but does'nt create a blade that can "cut forever".
