1st Year Shield Knives

Former Schrade President Walley Gardner and principal Joe Hufnagel joined with nine master cutlers to form a group of US craftsmen with over 300 years of combined knife making experience to create Canal Street Cutlery. It was first located in upstate New York where a long and rich tradition of quality knife making dates back to the 19th century. Unfortunately, the company closed its doors in 2015, but not before making some great knives. The brand was resurrected in 2018 as Canal Street Cutlery Co-Op & focused on making very small batches of high quality traditional knives. As a Co-Op, it was owned by the knife makers who worked there. Unfortunately, the business model couldn't hold up & the entity again ceased production.

1st Year Shield Knives

Post by philco »

I have thus far managed to pick up four knives now with the 1st year shield on them. The ones I have are all in the dark amber stag bone handles. So far I have the congress, whittler, reverse gunstock stockman, and now the Wildcat Driller. Does anyone know how many models that Canal Street produced with the 1st year shield and /or how many of each model were produced?

I'm not sure about the numbers, Phil. The only ones I have are the Congress and Whittler that came as a set w/display. I didn't even know about the Gunstock or the Wildcat. ::shrug::

Kelley my understanding is that they produced knives with the 1st year shield to commerate the conclusion of their first year in business. (First anniversary if you will) The paperwork that came with this knife indicates it was made in 2006. Canal Street began making knives in 2005. I also have a couple of half moon trappers with a 5th year shield which were made in 2010.

Thanks Mumbly and Phil! ::tu:: I love the GEC's but in my opinion, Canal Street ranks right up there with them. I only have 2, but I like them both. ::nod::
