Any Canal Street Fans Out There?

Former Schrade President Walley Gardner and principal Joe Hufnagel joined with nine master cutlers to form a group of US craftsmen with over 300 years of combined knife making experience to create Canal Street Cutlery. It was first located in upstate New York where a long and rich tradition of quality knife making dates back to the 19th century. Unfortunately, the company closed its doors in 2015, but not before making some great knives. The brand was resurrected in 2018 as Canal Street Cutlery Co-Op & focused on making very small batches of high quality traditional knives. As a Co-Op, it was owned by the knife makers who worked there. Unfortunately, the business model couldn't hold up & the entity again ceased production.

I still like the folders and Canal Street does produce some outstanding beauties, but there is something about the strait knives , drop points especially that seem to draw me in that direction!

Ken, It was an SFO for Red Hill Cutlery that I believe came out around 2006 (I'll have to look that up). I'm not quite ready to part with this 'ol bird yet, but perhaps Red Hill still has a few in stock? The story went that it was some old bone left over from Schrade that they intended to make 25 knives out of, but the quality of what was left only allowed for something like 15. makes sense since Schrade did come out with some blue rope jigged knives for their 100th anniversary just before they closed:

The one I do not have yet ... Is that Maroon handled one.

How is the color in it? All smooth and lovely just like the Schrade Maroon ? or is it even better and how was it died? I am thinking Schrade used Delrin.

Ken, the color's nice. The dye seems to have gone only just beaneath the surface, where the handle is hafted it goes back to black, nice contrast. I'll see if I can get a good shot of it tomorrow or when the weather permits (It's supposed to pour, looks like Spring is here :D )

Eric

PS- is this the maroon you're talking about? It was known as maroon swirl, a type of plastic, and a for-runner to delrin. Much of this material had a tendency to shrink quite a bit, notice the bolster gaps.

Some nice knives you fellers have there ::tu:: I can't believe I overlooked this thread. What do they say about eyesight being one the first things to go?

I have about 20 Canal Streets so far. Here are 3 that I really like.
First is a smooth brown bone Whittler - #1 of 11
Next is a green jigged bone Whittler - #6 of 8
And last a Trapper with African Bloodwood - #10 of 25

I'll post more when I get time to take some pics.....

I am drooling over those CS knives. ::drool::

I have a question about a description. What is a "Moon Pie" trapper? The only visible difference that I can discern is the size of the rear bolster. Is that the reason for the "Moon Pie" designation?

By the way, I love moon pies and RC Cola! ::nod:: PaPa used to take us grandkids to the Carbon Mercantile and Texaco station and buy us a moon pie for a quarter and an RC for a dime! Those were the days, now!

I may buy a moon pie trapper just because I like that memory so much ... ::tear:: ::nod::

You're right about the size of the bolsters being the reason for 'moonpie'.

Those werethe days, weren't they? Come to think of it, I have a couple of moonpies in the pantry right now. ::drool::

Boys y'all got me to thinkin about RC Cola and it dawned on me I haven't seen any in years. I personally never developed a taste for it so it's not something I would have missed right off, but now I'm wondering if they still make it. Anybody know for sure? ::shrug::
