Lets have your LEAST favorite Case folding patterns ...

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

I dislike the 109X Baby Copperhead more than any other Case pattern. I've seen way too many of these that have a loose pen blade.

I'm with ferg the toothpick could disappear and I wouldn't miss it, the large lockbacks too. Make room for a 31 frame and a 99 frame.

Not really big on peanuts or 33's, although I do have a few of both. The only "small" pattern I really like is the tadpole. Like some others have said, I never liked the Russlock or the toothpick.

Never liked seahorse whittlers either. I know, it's wierd cuz whittlers are my favorite pattern overall. ::shrug::

Like many here, I'm not a huge fan of the Russlock...although I have several that I got for reasons other than the actual knife.

Like these two which I got because I liked the shields and blade etch...unfortunately, they just happened to be on Russlocks.

Although I'm not necessarily a fan of Russlocks in general... as a collector, I DO like some Russlocks, such as these two, for example:

Thanks gdogg & mgdel.

Although I'm not particularly fond of the blue spacers, the mammoth bark raises the level of that Russlock from otherwise boring, run-of the mill bone (6) to a piece of art IMO.

But, since this thread is supposed to be about our LEAST favorite Case patterns...here are mine:

1) Toothpick...bleeech ::sotb:: never have liked that pattern (except the Laguiole version)

2) Any pattern with more than one blade sharing a single pivot (I won't bother to list them all). If a knife absolutely must have more than one blade, I prefer them to be on opposite ends with each blade on its own pivot (although I do make an exception for the secondary blades on a 3-blade whittler).

3) Any pattern that has duplicate blade patterns (muskrat, canoe, baby butter bean, Texas longhorn, etc.), even 3-blade whittlers that have two identical secondary blades like on some of the classic whittlers--what's the point?

4) Gimmicks like the ill-conceived Date Shield or all the Easter-egg-colored scales or excessive scrolling/etching, regardless of the pattern.

Now, what I would like to see from Case is more patterns with Wharncliffe blades.

I have most (or possibly all) of the patterns they do offer with Wharncliffe blades, such as:

Trapper (54)
Mini-Trapper (07)
Tiny-Trapper (154)
Copperlock (549)
Copperhead (49)
Mini-Copperhead (109)
Teardrop Jack (028)
Seahorse Whittler (55)
Swayback Jack/Gent (117)

But I would also really like to see these patterns offered with a Wharncliffe blade as well:

Slimline Trapper (048)
Mini-Copperlock (749)
Doctor (85)
Baby Doc (82)

~Q~, don't get carried away. While I understand your passion for the Wharncliffe blade (boy do I understand), it would be sacrilege to put a Wharncliffe in a Doctor knife. A spear blade, paired with a spatula blade, is traditional for those knives. Anything else just looks weird. They put a clip blade main in a few and it's all wrong for the knife. I'm pretty sure I don't have an example with the clip blade because I couldn't bring myself to spend my money on one.

Aw c'mon, Jerry...sometimes ya just gotta shake things up a bit; think outside the box. I think a Wharncliffe on a Dr makes a perfect combination...just what the Dr. ordered so-to-speak!

I don't like Russlocks, baby tooth picks (although I think I'd like the large ones), or seahorse whittlers.

I love whittlers, and I like wharncliff blades. But the seahorse whittler is to my mind the ugliest knife Case has made, and I sure don't like the way it feels in my hand.

I totally agree - love big beefy wharncliffe's too, but there's just something off with the seahorse whittler ... seems out of proportion.

Don't like little stuff like Pen Knives or Baby Butterbeans.

Also, Muskrats or toothpicks really don't do it for me.

I've gotta say though, I love the Russlocks!

Lansky1 wrote:... At the risk of being negative, I'm sure there are some common patterns that we all don't particularly care for. There are many threads on favorite patters ... I'll lead off with a few patterns that I don't care for & probably won't own again (no offense to anyone if these patterns are their favorites ... just thought it would make for interesting discussion):

- Russlock
- Canoe
- Trapper
- Muskrat
- Sodbuster
- Congress
- Barlow

well, since I started this thread a few months ago, I have a few modification to make to my list ... you'll notice the common thread for those I didn't like, is that I didn't have one of them. ::facepalm::

- Barlow - has become one of my fave's - love the half stops & short/stout clip blade. Has a very hefty feel to it for it's size.

- Trapper - I got a great deal on a new one & lopped the curved end of the spey blade off & made it into a nice hefty sheepsfoot blade - the large trapper model is very well suited to this modification. Tough part was figuring out how to cut a respectable nail nick. Really like the knife now.

- Canoe - picked up a baby butterbean - nice swedge grind & feel ... just wish it was 3-3.25 inches long - it's really small. Full size canoe doesn't have the swedge grind, which is a disappointment.

- Seahorse Whittler - found a deal on one (honestly, the only reason I got one). Actually really like it - it's such an oddball though. The wharncliffe blade is unbelievably stout - it's the thickest blade I've seen on any Case knife & they grind it straight down to the edge - has a really extreme taper. It's not one of my all time fave's (like the barlow has become), but it's an occasional carry now. fit and finish are the best I've seen from Case - close to perfect.

Thanks David ... I now see there's something about the Barlow - it's a true classic. Never cared for the utilitarian looks of it, but after I got one, it all made sense ... ::tu::
