Case 30 Small Cigar Pattern

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case 30 Small Cigar Pattern

Post by RalphAlsip »

Here is an unusual variation of the Case 30 pattern: Case Tested XX 06230 SH. I can't find this one in any of my reference material. Hope that is not a bad sign ::hmm::

I wish Case would reintroduce this knife. It is a pattern I would carry because I like the long pull sheepfoot blade.

(wlf Lyle be sure to look at the blade open picture - this is not a Farmer's Jack (grin). I know the handle shape is not right either. With the closed blade sitting up high it does resemble a FJ at a glance.)

Does anybody have 30's to share - especially the 3 blade variation?

Thanks for looking

I have at least 3 books that reference Case Tested 06230SH in green bone . Unfortunately , they do not have any pictures . The books are Sargent's , Ferguson , and Parker . They refer to a large sheep foot blade , which would seem to match your knife . Based on this info , I would give your knife a ::tu:: .

Jerry;

Great knives, thanks for posting. The 30 is a hard to find pattern.

I have attached a clip from the Tested era Case factory price lists, note the variations offered. Evidently there was also one with a master spay blade.

I personally have never seen nor heard of a three bladed 30 variation - have you seen one? The only ones listed in the old catalogs/price lists are the two blade versions. Case did make the 055 in three blades.

I have a 30 pattern Clauss Green bone. Spear long pull master and pen blade. It has been buffed and
cleaned. Marked on the master with a 45 on pile side. I will do a picture later if anyone wants to see it.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the 06230's. Thanks Bob and Steve for the documentation. I felt pretty comfortable with the knife to begin with, but now I don't have any worries at all.

Steve, here is a picture of a 6330 (not my knife; not my picture). It was on eBay a couple of years ago and I really regret that I let it get away. The picture is low resolution and I thought it looked good even though I couldn't authenticate the pattern via a reference. Really interested to hear what you think.

I also added pictures of the 02230 variations (thanks to Jerry zp4ja) and a 05230 1/2 (thanks to Tom olderdogs). The stag on the 05230 is really pretty in my opinion.

Thanks a lot Steve, for showing me there are 3 more variations (06230 Sp, 09230 and 09230 1/2) that I'll struggle to find :)

Harold, I would be grateful to see the picture of your Clauss.

Thought I would bump this thread and see if folks can post any of their examples of the 30 pattern.

Here is a Case Tested XX 05230 1/2. The closed length of the 30 pattern is 3 1/4".

Thanks for looking.

Jerry those are great little knives. I first saw them when Nevada Jerry had a couple up for sale. Are they the same width as the 94's and 45's only shorter?

Thank you for the gracious comments John, David and Greg.

Greg, here is a link to a post with a group picture with a 30, 45, and 94. All three dimensions of size increase from the small to medium to large. The 30 and 45 can be difficult to distinguish in individual pictures, but you can easily see a difference in person side-by-side. The 94 is a big knife and is very easy to distinguish.

Today Case uses the 090 pattern equal end small cigar as their pattern of choice. I would have liked to see them use the 55 number when they reintroduced it. It is 3 3/8 inches and has a secondary sheepfoot blade. I have carried one and can say it is a fine cutter.

Reid, I'll watch for the 090 pattern you mentioned and add one to my carry pile.

In the meantime here is a Case Tested XX 06230 1/2 that I managed to find. Scott TripleF refurbished this one as can be seen from the before and after pictures. Except for being dirty, and maybe even unfinished from the factory, it was in decent shape. The blades were full length and the handles in great condition. It is common on the 30's I have seen for the main blade look short even if they appear to be full. ::shrug::

Thanks for looking.

Keith, very nice Tested 05230 1/2. It has some beautiful old Case stag handles. ::tu:: ::tu:: The stag examples of this pattern are hard to find. I posted pictures of this knife earlier, but the pictures didn't show the stag very well so I'm taking a mulligan and doing a repost. It looks like it could be a brother to your knife.
