Case & Case related knives over 100 years old

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

I'm a little curious about the Electric. In an earlier post you stated that Friedmann & LauterJung imported these knives. Are they German and do they have anything to do with Electric Cut. Co in Walden, N.Y.
Greg,
JBF Champlin came from German immigrants I understand but I don't believe Friedmann & Lauterjung limited their importing to Germany. The Electric Cutlery Co was a separate company as I understand. All of the old F&L imports are only stamped "Electric". Goins said this was only until 1890. Champlin started Cattaraugus Cutlery Co around that time hiring his Case brother in Laws to help. I think W R Case worked for Friedmann & Lauterjung at one time prior. Hope this helps to understand the connection.

Interesting info Tom. So if I understand you correctly Electric was sort of an in house brand name of F&L?

Greg, Goins says ELECTRIC was a trademark used by Friedmann & Lauterjung but I have seen other books refer to Electric mentioning France as their origin. I wish I could be more precise.

Electric was a New Jersey cutlery that was later bought by New York Knife and used as a mark on a secondary line.Thats where Walden comes in.

Took me a minute to unwind that Roger.you're not talking about Tom's Electric .
So a knife marked Electric Cut. Co. Walden was actually made by NYKC?

Jerry, the spatula blades are not sharp. I wonder how many of the doctor'/ knives were really used for the purpose intended. I had an old WRCase doctor's knife that had the spatula blade as the main blade.

Tom
If you think about medicine and doctors of 100 years ago or more, many small town and rural doctors (and veterinarians) were also the pharmacist. They had to compound and dispense medicines so a knife and spatula would be handy. I'm thinking someone must have been buying these, else they wouldn't have been making them. ::shrug::

Good point, Ken. I wonder why they continued to make them in modern times though. Can't be much demand for them today. ::shrug::
