Who's Into Rough Black?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Another couple of beauties there Jerry. I noticed that the "jigging" on the baby stockman is of a different style than most of the others posted here...is that indicative of anything in particular?

Thanks Mike!

So I am "bookless" at the moment so here it goes from memory...

I believe that Rough Black is also referred to as PlastiStag. The jigging that you refer to is not traditional in the sense that it is actually created from a molding process.
The material is poured into the mold that has the jigging grooves and dimples as part of the mold. I THINK that there was a mold for each pattern number as I don't think that is was done in a sheet and then cut. The reason I say this is that I recall that same pattern in rough black in a certain era will have the exact same "Mold Jigging Pattern".

Again my friend, from memory. I will try and confirm it or someone can confirm or correct me if I am wrong. I hope that answers your question.

Hey Harold, Hope life is well. SWEET KNIFE!!! Best I can tell from the pic, is that a CASE XX 6265 in Rough Black with a flat blade (not a saber blade)? Without the blades open best I can tell by what I see. I'm guessing early XX if so. Does it have a model stamp on it? Looks like a XX frame to me but I am alittle cloudy on the era farme differences sometimes.

zp4ja, Sab Tested. I am convinced that Case made Tested knives way
passed the time frame that we were all taught 1920-1940. The 65's
are an example of this. Maybe up to almost 1950. JMO based on
looking at Case knives for several years. Also I have heard this from
a notable knife historian.

Here is another...

CASE TESTED 6206-1/2 "Tiny Jack". Again, nice half stops and snaps on this "Tiny Jack", as they are called. Blades full, unsharpened. They don't make them like they used to, in my opinion. A whopping 2-5/8" closed. Nice little TESTED knife. Heck, nice knife in any era. I believe discontinued after XX era and never reintroduced.

Picked up another rough black “gum fuddy”. This one is a little unusual in that it doesn’t appear to have ever been carried or sharpened, and no dirt, lint in the blade well nor rust on the backsprings. But it has some light “pepper” pitting on the blades. I cleaned them up with a little Simichrome polish. Only rough black 64047P I’ve ever seen so I had to get it. ::nod::
