Very nice! ::tu:: Just as a butterbean is a baby canoe, a gunboat is nothing more than a big canoe. They are both variations on the original canoe pattern.

Here's another canoe, LE Series IV pitch black bone...

That's nice!

I had to send my second NIB Johnny Cash ebony wood knife back to seller. The quality control has been horrible on that model for some reason. I have bought at least half a dozen other Case canoes from the seller - all are tip top with maybe minor polishing required if anything. But these JC knives have scratched wood/blades and or bolsters... ::doh:: Now the dealer will hand pick one for me. Love when people stand buy what they sell (like I do in my business)! /rant over!

Sorry to hear that Titan. I posted a pic of mine on page 3, it was fine when it arrived. I bought it from SMKW when the JC canoes first came out a year or two ago.

Nice! I take it those Limited Editions have mainly the same blade etching, but different handle materials/colors that make them limited editions? I don't have any.

I came across this in my mailbox today. Seller on ebay described as SS blade. Low and behold it is marked SS on the blade! This is the first Indian in the Canoe etch I have come across that had SS not CV blades! (Educate me on this too if you have a chance please!!)

Damn Titan! Another one I've been wanting to get! We should combine our collections. You seem to have the ones I don't and vice-verse, together we probably cover most of the canoes made!!! ::tu::

You are correct about the LE Series, they differ in handle color, jig pattern, and shield. Each series is produced in limited numbers, the earlier series were 2500 and the more recent series are 3000. They haven't offered a canoe or butterbean pattern in all of the series (there are usually 11 patterns in each series) but I have every one that has been offered to date (canoe or butterbean that is).

I can't educate you on the canoe etching on SS. I'd need to do some research. I know that the ones I have are all CV.

Here's another LE, Series IX, Burnt White Bone.

Mammoth Ivory!!! Case just started offering that recently, didn't they? Your pic shows it off much better than the ads I've seen. Very cool! ::tu::

Here's one you'll find interesting. It's not a Case, it"s a Buck "canoe - moose" with mastodon inlay handles and Chuck Buck's signature on the blade. It's a very unusual canoe with an unusual set of blades.

I think the mammoth is a pretty recent offering from Case. The "crack" that appears on it is filled and it feels pretty durable. The reverse side looks completely different. They apparently didn't try to match handles or even come close. They only made 100 in each pattern. For $250 an American made knife with Siberian Mammoth handles and Damascus blades seemed like a good deal. It was one of the first Case knives I bought (told you I was a noob)! The box date is April 2012.

Nice Buck knife! I don't own any other canoes but Case.

I do have these Canal Street Cannitlers which I am very impressed with. Not sure if you've seen 'em but I did post them before.
Image
To me, they are more of a canoe than a Gunboat! They have a nearly identical footprint ("form factor") as the Case canoes. You just get an extra blade! Blades are D2 steel. Did I mention they are impressive?

Beautiful CSCs, Titan! ::tu::  They are canoes. Case even makes a canoe with 4 blades. The determining factor is size. A butterbean is @ 2 3/4" closed, a canoe is @ 3 5/8" closed, and a gunboat is @ 4 1/4" closed. Some of the European makers produce canoe patterns in between those measurements but the measurements I listed are a pretty good "rule of thumb". The "standard" numbers of blades are butterbean - 2, canoe - 2, and gunboat - 3. However, there are variations and they have been called many things but they are just canoes with more or less blades. In my book, if it is canoe shaped and 2 3/4" closed it's a butterbean even if it has 6 blades. Same with 3 5/8".......it's a canoe. I have canoes with 1, 2, & 3 blades. If it's canoe shaped and is 4 1/4" closed......it's a gunboat. I don't know why they don't just call them small canoes, canoes, and large canoes like they do with trappers or toothpicks. ::shrug::

Here are some examples of blade variations in canoes:

There are two 1 blade canoes, two 2 blade canoes, and two 3 blade canoes in this set.

Image

This is a 3 blade Wostenholm.

Image

This is a 1 blade that is currently listed at SMKW.

Image

All of the above knives are 3 5/8" long in the closed position.

I had seen your Native American tribe ones earlier. Didn't look hard enough to realize some were 1 and 3 bladed versions!

At some point I gotta end up with a Case "Big Chief" for the collection.

Thanks for the education!!

I don't know if you want to call it an education, there are those who will argue with my definitions. I just call 'em as I see 'em.

1996 82131...

Maybe selling some of my post 80' Canoes. Will let you guys know.

I could be wrong but my Dad stated 96' as first year Case put a shield on a pearl knife. Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong.

Nice "newer knife" pearl though the pics don't do it justice.

Beautiful knife zp4ja! ::tu:: MOP is another one that I don't have yet. I have a Case abalone but no Case MOP. I have some MOP canoes from other makers though.

Here's a Bulldog canoe in MOP:

And here's another Case baby canoe to keep the parade moving.... ::nod::

BTW, I can't answer your question about the shield on MOP. ::shrug:: I believe your father is right, though. If I find any info on the subject I'll let you know.

The last one posted, with the red handles, look much better in your photo than the stock photo. Had no idea the text was raised!

I'm gonna have to bust out the camera. There are a couple more that I have that I haven't posted yet. Nothing blued or damascus though!
